Julien isaacs still remembers teaching English in a small rural village in Anhui. Anhui is located in eastern China, where the majestic Huangshan Mountains are located. He lived with the math teacher at the elementary school. There are 20 students in his class, and students come to school every day from nearby towns. His village has fewer than 500 people. Such an experience is a far cry from Julian's background growing up in Los Angeles, California, but Asian culture has always fascinated him.

Julian has been studying in secondary school since the age of 15 Chinese. Growing up, he worked in product management and considered China to be a must-see for him to gain insight into global business knowledge and move to the forefront of e-commerce and technology development.

U.S.-China dual degree

China is one of the global technology leaders. The technology platforms owned by the West can find equivalent versions in China. Alibaba is the Chinese version of Amazon, Didi Taxi is the Chinese version of Uber, and WeChat is the Chinese version of whatsapp.

Julian has been working as a U.S.-China business hub. Prior to his MBA, he graduated from Georgetown University. After graduating from college, he worked for a fashion search engine company in San Francisco, and then at a U.S.-China logistics company, helping American companies ship their products to the Far East.

In search of a suitable business school and MBA program, he locked in the Tsinghua MBA-MIT Sloan School of Management Master of Management double degree program, which allowed him to study MBA at Tsinghua University in Beijing for the first year and complete the Master of Management program at the MIT Sloan School of Management in the second year.

Like MIT's Sloan School of Management, Tsinghua University's School of Economics and Management has strong ties to the tech industry, and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is a member of the Tsinghua School of Economics and Management's advisory board. Such a combination looks perfectly fitting. In order to pass the project application, Julian took the GMAT exam and scored around 700. In his application materials, he introduced his personal experience and career goals, and also accepted a half-hour interview with Tsinghua professors through Skype. "The teachers asked a lot of questions around my application materials, including questions about my original intentions for pursuing an MBA, and some questions about my past academic and professional experiences." He recalled.

In the end, he successfully won the scholarship of the Chinese government and the Tsinghua MBA program, "They hope that the scholarship students will devote themselves to studying China, have a strong interest in China, and contribute to China's international business and trade in the future." Julian explained.

Living in China

Students pursuing a double MBA and a master's degree in management study the core MBA courses at Tsinghua university in their first year, such as accounting, leadership and organizational behavior, and then complete a business-related thesis. During their first year at Tsinghua, MIT professors come to Tsinghua for several week-long intensive courses. Zhu Lian mentioned that one of the classes that impressed him the most was a marketing class taught by Professor Zhang Juanjuan of the Sloan School of Management.

During the second year of study at MIT, students take elective courses with MBA, master's, and doctoral students at MIT. The Master of Management program is equivalent to the second year of the MIT MBA program.

While studying at MIT, Julian tried his best to challenge himself academically. In his second year at MIT, he wrote more than 100 pages of papers on U.S.-China technology developments, covering areas such as cybersecurity, data, and cloud technology.

In the student dormitory of Tsinghua University in Beijing, Zhu Lian experienced the rapid development of Chinese technology.

"As an American, living in China is an adventure." "In terms of technology and social development, there are so many exciting things happening in China, and in some ways even ahead of the United States," he said. For example, I don't take my wallet with me every time I leave my dorm room, and I can make mobile payments through my phone whenever I need to. ”

"Some people think it's hard for foreigners to live in China, or that there's a huge cultural divide." He went on: "But Chinese people are very friendly and they welcome you with open arms. ”

During his MBA at Tsinghua University, Zhu Lian visited Alibaba's headquarters and saw the application of their virtual reality technology in shopping; he also visited JD.com and went to see the warehouse supported by artificial intelligence technology, where the packages were sorted and scanned by robots.

"I was very impressed with that." "Tsinghua values action learning and encourages students to reach out to the most active communities and groups in Beijing," he said. With its own resources and network, Tsinghua University is able to establish connections between different groups and organizations, which has created many job opportunities for us. ”

U.S.-China cooperation

Julian is now a product manager at an e-commerce software and logistics company in Los Angeles. He continued his previous career trajectory, but the gains he received from the double degree program made him more at ease at work.

One of the challenges he faces now is the escalating trade friction between the United States and China. Many of his career goals are closely related to U.S.-China trade, and he believes that both the United States and China are willing to strengthen cooperation.

Julian often asked his former American and Chinese classmates about their cities and industries. Regardless of the political environment, as an American who studied an MBA in China, he hopes that more americans will be like him.

"China's economy is and will continue to play an increasingly important role for the global economy." He said.

"It's important to understand how China works, how Chinese business works, to know how to make friends and do business with Chinese, and Tsinghua University can provide you with everything you need to know."
