Toxoplasmosis in pigs is a hematologic protozoa disease caused by Toxoplasma gondii. The incidence is more frequent from May to October, and the incidence of piglets aged 3 to 5 months is severe.

1. Clinical symptoms

Affected pigs are depressed, conjunctival cyanosis, purple-red patches on the skin, body temperature rises to 40 °C-42 °C; breathing difficulties, cough; sometimes enteritis and neurological symptoms; pregnant sows can have premature birth or produce underdeveloped piglets or stillbirths.

Sick and dead pigs have swollen lymph nodes throughout the body with small necrotic spots; lung hyperedema, lobular interstitium widening, which is filled with translucent jelly-like exudate; there is a large amount of mucus and foam in the trachea and bronchi, and some pneumonia are complicated; the spleen is enlarged and brown; the liver is gray-red and scattered in necrosis; and the mesenteric lymph nodes are enlarged.

3. Laboratory diagnosis

Liver, spleen, lung and other disease material smear staining, in the oil microscope can see the crescent-shaped or fusiform insect body can be confirmed.

4. Treatment methods

Sulfadiazine and pyrimethamine are used in combination, mixed according to the instructions (first doubling), 2 times a day for 3-5 days.
