The woman was sentenced to death by the New Taipei District Court on the 25th, and the case triggered discussions from all walks of life.

According to the China Times News Network, the Central News Agency, Lianhe Bao and other media reports, the mother surnamed Wu strangled her 8-year-old daughter and 6-year-old son in a hotel in February this year, strangled her children, and then swallowed the drugs to die. Because the woman sent a text message to her ex-husband, saying that she wanted to "go" with the child, it aroused the ex-husband's vigilance, and she was rescued and survived.

According to the report, during the court trial, Wu Nu admitted but did not reflect on the process of strangling the child, only emphasizing that she had raised her children alone for seven years, that it was not smooth to find a job, and that she had no personal freedom.

The New Taipei District Court held that Wu Nu was over 29 years old at the time of the crime, killed people in a cruel and cold-blooded manner, and was sentenced to death according to the adult's intentional homicide of a child.

After the verdict was announced, Wu Nu's defense lawyer issued a statement on the 26th, emphasizing that the judge ignored Wu Nu's situation and the judgment was biased. Defense lawyers said that after the divorce in 2014, Wu Nu raised her children alone and turned to her brother and sister-in-law because of her unstable work. All kinds of stress caused him to suffer from depression. Before the incident, Wu Nu had been unemployed for 2 months, and she had a gap with her brother and sister-in-law and took her children to a hotel. If you are not forced into a desperate situation, you will not be willing to go to Huangquan with your children.

The Taiwan Women's New Knowledge Foundation said in a statement on the 26th that it respects judicial trials, but calls on judges to face up to the situation of single mothers and hopes that the authorities will review the lack of current welfare policies. The statement said that Wu Nu's lack of public childcare resources and interpersonal network support, coupled with the discrimination and stereotype of single mothers in the rental market and labor market, it is not difficult to imagine the despair that arises after encountering walls everywhere.

The Foundation therefore called for the administration to reflect on why it failed to provide timely social support, rather than ignoring the burden of personal care and leaving single-parent families to fend for themselves.

In addition, some female "legislators", celebrities and other public figures have publicly stated that the court's heavy judgment failed to take into account the helplessness of the vulnerable group of single mothers.

The New Taipei District Court reportedly said it would not respond to individual cases.
