Except for the small shizi
Did you know that There is still a big word in Chongqing?
As an important interchange station of Rail Transit Line 1, the place name Xiaoshizi is undoubtedly familiar to chongqing people. But what is less known is that in addition to the small shizi, there used to be a big shizi here. At the beginning of the last century, the area around The Copper Street between Xiaoshizi and Dashizi was one of Chongqing's financial centers, gathering financial institutions such as the Central Bank, the Bank of Communications, and the Chuankang Civilian Commercial Bank.
The word "Shi" is the same as "ten", which means crossroads. According to the Gazetteer of Chongqing Municipal Central District, Xiaoshizi is named after the intersection where the original north-south Datong Street, the Dragon King Temple, and the east-west Xinjiekou and Datie Street intersect.
According to the 1925 edition of the "New Survey of Chongqing City" provided by the Chongqing Municipal Geographic Information and Remote Sensing Application Center, the former Dashizi was located at the intersection of Datong Street, Shaanxi Road and Dongshuimen Bridge south of Xiaoshizi, which was one of the dividing points of the upper and lower half of the city. With the development of the city, the original Dashizi location has been built to build the East Watergate Bridge.
There was a shangshu who was hand-picked by Zhu Yuanzhang
Several places in old Chongqing are named after him
Even old Chongqing people will think that this is a strange place name when it comes to Jianjiaqiao —this street named after the Ming Dynasty official Shangshu Jianyi is actually today's May Fourth Road.
In the eighteenth year of the Ming Dynasty, Hongwu was hand-picked by Zhu Yuanzhang as a Ming Jinshi, and successively held the positions of doctor, young master, Taibao and official Shangshu (Tianguan), and was a heavy minister of the Ming Dynasty. It is worth mentioning that there is still a Tianguanfu Street in Qixinggang, Yuzhong District, which is also named after him, Tianguanfu Street is north of Consul's Lane and south of Horseshoe Street, which is a famous historical street.
Why did you change the name of Jiajiaqiao to May Fourth Road? Time goes back to 1939, Chongqing was bombed by Japanese aircraft, and during the "May 3rd" and "May Fourth" bombings of that year, the streets of Jianjiaqiao were burned by fire. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War in 1945, this street was rebuilt and named "May Fourth" Road as a memorial.

"After the Ming Dynasty, when economic exchanges between the upper and lower reaches of the Yangtze River increased, some family families began to appear in Chongqing, and their houses often covered an area of several acres and gradually formed streets, so many times they were named after their surnames." Li Zhengquan, an expert on chongqing geographical names and culture, introduced in the "Miscellaneous Talks on Chongqing Geographical Names" that during the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty, the former residence of Han Cheng, the chief soldier of Chongqing Town, was inside the Nanji Gate, so in addition to Hanfu Street, there were several place names such as Hanjia Lane and Hanjia Alley.
