The project is divided into five main functional areas: elk habitat area, elk field (rotational grazing) area, isolation area, water conservation area and science popularization mission area. The total area of the project area is about 315 mu, which belongs to the farmland composite production mode, and is distributed in woodland (falling feather fir public welfare forest), farmland and ponds. The surrounding area is fish ponds, roads, etc., and the terrain is flat and relatively closed.
As a unique and unique deer in China and the only deer suitable for survival in wetland environments, elk originated in the plains or swamps of the Yangtze River and Yellow River basins in central and eastern China, about 2 million to 3 million years ago, equivalent to the time of human emergence. Xincun Township is located in the northwest of Chongming, originally a beach of the north branch of the Yangtze River, which meets the habitat conditions such as suitable natural conditions, abundant edible plants, suitable breeding places, and good hidden conditions, and is suitable for elk breeding.
Elk has a lot of roots in the rice culture of Xincun Township. Legend has it that the ancestors of China drove the elk into the swamp and let it trample on. The leaves and grass roots left over from the elk are trampled in the mud, and the water and soil are sticky, becoming a primitive rice field, which is called "millet field" by the people. The elk word for "elk" is "deer" and the next "rice" is derived from this.
Based on Chongming's rich tidal resources and the construction of a world-class ecological island, Xincun Township has introduced elk populations to continuously adapt to the habitat environment, gradually expand the basic population, and accumulate more experience for elk conservation and the successful release of elk populations in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. In the future, it will develop into a source base for the spread and breeding of elk populations in Chongming Three Islands and other parts of Shanghai, explore the development mode of "three-life integration" of ecological life and production, strive to create an ecological development pattern of harmonious coexistence of forests, fields, water, grasses, deer and people, protect and publicize elk germplasm resources, rural farming cultural resources and ecological landscape resources, vigorously promote the concept of wildlife protection, and build an ecological science education base in Shanghai
