If it weren't for the Malaysian teacher who taught English and saying "you are bound to become somebody," or if it weren't for his phD supervisor James J. Heckman saying to him, "If you have something you really want to do, you should chase it," Wall Street in the United States might have had one more smart young man, while China would have had one less tech company dedicated to applying AI to the healthcare industry.
Dream with it and return from school
Chen Kuan, 15, left his parents and went to Singapore alone to attend high school. After graduating from high school, he came to the University of Chicago in the United States to study economics. After graduating from undergraduate, he stayed at his alma mater to directly pursue a double doctorate in finance and economics, and during his doctoral studies, he gave up his double doctorate and decided to take a leave of absence to return to China to start a business. He wants to use the skills he learned, ai technology and mathematical models to change or improve some social phenomena, so that mathematical models can bring actual social value. When he met his mentor, James J. Heckman, he said he was ready to take a break from school and return home to start a business. Heckman told him a motto: "If there is something that you really want to do, you should chase it." ”
Wind and rain, forge ahead
In the early days of entrepreneurship, two years before the outbreak of the AI wave in China, medical artificial intelligence was not known to the public, and it was actually difficult to start a business. He and co-founder Wang Shaokang ran to thirty or forty hospitals across the country, and most of the hospitals at that time regarded them as liars, and they were driven out before they could finish speaking, and only one hospital was willing to cooperate.
In order to be close to customers and save money, he led the team to rent a dilapidated residential building outside the Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital, where they spent time with doctors every day to understand the real needs of doctors and developed the first AI model that can be used for medical imaging in China according to customer needs.
The reason for choosing the medical industry is that AI is a more social value for the medical industry than other industries. Medical resources are always scarce, and there are many patients at home and abroad who may not receive particularly good treatment. One of the great values of artificial intelligence is to homogenize medical resources through technology, so that people in different places can enjoy relatively average medical resources. Chen Kuan buried his head in work, followed the team to silently develop products, train models, and improve the recognition accuracy of products. He said that the establishment of a business is to give back to the society through the commercial operation of artificial intelligence technology, truly create value for the society and people's livelihood, and realize the value of personal life in this process.
Science and technology serve the country and create value
In January 2016, he founded Beijing Tuxiang Technology Co., Ltd., adhering to the belief of "using advanced technology to solve people's livelihood problems", using deep learning technology, developing a medical AI whole-process platform including AI deployment management platform, AI big data mining research platform and AI clinical application platform, creating medical AI products such as medical quality control, health management and scientific research innovation, and effectively providing advanced, intelligent and systematic services for the government, medical institutions, doctors and patients, and truly "promoting science and technology." Think of what you think". In the past 4 years, Chen Kuan has led the team to continuously explore and innovate in product research and development, marketing system and the establishment of a new model of AI medical treatment, through a sound scientific research and development system, to find an entry point to solve practical clinical problems, develop industrial-grade medical AI products and gradually introduce them to the market.
As of March 2020, the implementation points of Speculative Technology have covered 33 provincial-level administrative regions across the country. While expanding the Chinese medical market, it has completed the strategic layout of North America, Asia-Pacific and Europe, and it is assumed that medical AI services have covered 10 countries around the world, nearly 400 cooperative hospitals, with an average daily AI quality control operation of more than 53,000 cases, and the total number of completed cases has exceeded 16,000,000.
In the face of the epidemic, we will fight with all our might
At the beginning of the new year of 2020, a sudden outbreak of novel coronavirus pneumonia swept across the country. As early as the Spring Festival, he led The Idea Technology quickly set up a "pneumonia special version of the attack team" to fully invest in research and development, taking the lead in contacting the presidents and responsible persons of key hospitals such as Wuhan Tongji Hospital, Wuhan Zhongnan Hospital, and Shenzhen Third Hospital (National Clinical Research Center for Infectious Diseases) to understand the relevant needs, upgrade and develop new crown pneumonia AI products according to clinical needs, and contribute to the decision-making and management of public policies of the epidemic.
At the end of February 2020, Itsumus Technology obtained the EU medical device CE certification, which is the first CE certification of China's chest AI products. He led Imagine Technology to actively respond to the call of the country to "go global" in the fight against the epidemic, and reached a cooperation with Doctornet, Japan's largest leading enterprise in the field of remote imaging diagnosis, on March 4 to help Japan prevent and control the epidemic. On March 16, the University Hospital of Biomedical Sciences in Rome, Italy, officially installed and launched the speculative auxiliary diagnosis system to support the hospital's epidemic prevention system, and the two sides signed a renewal agreement and expanded the scope of use with it as the center. On March 30, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in the United States was launched, and for the first time, the "cloud online" approach was adopted. On April 7, the University Hospital jena in Germany was launched for ancillary diagnosis in eastern Germany. At the same time, more than a dozen hospitals in Russia will soon be put into use. At the beginning of April, it also won the tender project of 10 hospital AI systems in the European Union, using advanced Chinese intelligent technology to help the world fight the epidemic together.
In the process of fighting the epidemic, the technology under his leadership has been recommended by the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Chinese Academy of Information and Communications Technology, the China Broadcasting Society, the China Medical Equipment Association, the Shanghai Economic and Information Commission, the Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Association and other relevant ministries and commissions, industry associations, and 34 new crown pneumonia scientific research projects have been established with hospitals and research institutes, of which 8 are provincial government-funded projects. The cumulative number of scientific research submissions has reached 19, and 6 have been published, one of which was published in jama, the top sci journal in the medical field, with an impact factor of 51.27.
He led the pulsation technology in the process of fighting the epidemic, using the most advanced artificial intelligence technology combined with CT to help doctors screen patients with new crown pneumonia, prompt risks, improve efficiency, reduce the risk of cross-infection in the hospital; help hospitals quickly improve the construction of the new crown pneumonia diagnosis system in the short term, promote the rationalization of the new crown pneumonia diagnosis process and the improvement of diagnosis and treatment efficiency and quality, and improve the hospital's comprehensive treatment capacity and medical safety.
