Wading through the gates, green brick walls, mashi roads... Located in the north of Dongguan City, Zhiting Street, from Zhenhua Road in the south to Kuiyi Street in the north, is 525 meters long. According to legend, in the Ming Dynasty, there was a station and a pavilion here, and the holy will came to Guanguan, and the county order received the will here, hence the name. Nowadays, Kiting Street is more well known for its "Rib Rice on Zhiting Street" and "Former Residence of Rong Geng". What is less known is that this small street of Mashi has successively walked out of many people, and its academic achievements have spread throughout the fields of paleography, philosophy, jinshi archaeology, art, and education.

The exhibition "Zhiting Street: Cultural Memory of a City", which is currently on display at the Guancheng Library, is the first attempt to excavate and sort out the groups of scholars who have lived and studied in Zhiting Street. Through the exhibition, the reporter learned that from Zhiting Street, there are not only "Rong Men Sanjie" (Rong Geng, a master of paleography, Rong Zhaozu, a master of Ming Dynasty intellectual history, and Rong Yuan, a famous jinshi bibliographer), but also deng Bai, a famous arts and crafts educator, Wu Zhuangda, a geographer, and other well-known scholars. They were either born in Si, or grew up in Si, or learned in Si, or dedicated to Si, and their unremitting pursuit of culture, art, scholarship, medical technology, etc., together composed a unique humanistic atmosphere and cultural heritage of Zhiting Street.

The famous scholarly family of rongshi

Turning from Zhenhua Road, the old street of Guancheng, into Zhiting Street, walking a hundred meters inside is the "Former Residence of Rong Geng" of several university students. The former residence is located in No. 2, 4 and 6, Lane 8, Zhiting Street, connected together with a total of three entrances, this three-bay ordinary residential building covers an area of more than 200 square meters, is a traditional Lingnan style "three rooms and two corridors" style of Qing Dynasty residences. The former residence is the birthplace of Rong Geng and his brother Rong Zhaozu and sister Rong Yuan, walking inside, in addition to the exhibition board to introduce Rong Geng's life, writings, teacher inheritance and academic travel, etc., but also preserved a lot of furniture and supplies with Lingnan characteristics, a variety of decorations well restored the life imprint of Rong Geng's brothers and sisters in that year.

On the morning of November 2, the reporter visited the memorial hall of Rong Geng's former residence, and the administrator He Shu told reporters that since the large-scale series of exhibition activities of "Rong Geng and Dongguan" was held in August this year, the number of visitors and tourists who came to visit the former residence increased a lot, and Mr. Rong Geng's descendants also rushed back from all over the world.

It is most appropriate to describe Mr. Rong Geng as "the origin of the Shuxiang Mendi family": his grandfather Rong Heling was a jinshi in the second year of Qing Tongzhi (1863), and later served as the president of Dongguan Shilong Longxi Academy and Shunde Fengshan Academy for more than ten years, cultivating a large number of talents. His father Rong Zuogong was a twenty-three-year-old Gong of Guangxu, with a strong record of Knowledge and a collection of 10,000 volumes; his uncle Rong Zuchun studied from Ju Lian, one of the originators of the Lingnan School of painting in the late Qing Dynasty, and was good at painting landscape figures, flowers, birds, insects and fish, and Rong Geng had studied painting with him when he was a teenager.

And the Deng family on rong geng's mother's side is also a scholarly door, and the two families of Rong Deng are worthy of the name of "door to door". Grandfather Deng Rongjing and Rong Geng's grandfather were good friends, and they were both from the same jinshi background. In particular, Rong Geng's fourth uncle, Deng Erya, is a famous master of calligraphy and seal engraving in modern Lingnan, and he is also Rong Geng's academic and artistic enlightenment teacher. Rong Geng learned Jinshi, the second brother Rong Zhaoxin learned to engrave, the third brother Rong Zhaozu learned ancient Chinese, and the three brothers were educated a lot by their uncle Deng Erya, which also laid the foundation for the future academic research of the Rong Geng brothers. Rong Geng later mentioned Deng Erya's enlightenment education in the preface to his famous work "Jin WenBian".

The small street talent has a strong humanistic atmosphere

In addition to the famous Rong family of scholars, there are also the Tang family of traditional Chinese medicine heirlooms, the Liang family with excellent poetry and painting, and the Luo family who preach and teach, etc., who have lived here for generations and have many talents.

Li Bingqiu, director of the Party History Research Office of the Dongguan Municipal Party Committee, said that Zhiting Street is located between the west corner and the north corner of Guancheng. Since the middle of the Qing Dynasty, the two corners of the area have been the commercial and trade centers of Dongguan. This is also a district that emphasizes the teaching of Chongwen, and the academy has a lot of social learning.

The Northwest Corner Of Kiting Street (formerly part of Duntou Street and Zhouwu Street) was built in the 26th year of Qing Daoguang (1846). In October of the nineteenth year of the Qing Dynasty (1893), Kang Youwei's disciples Liang Qichao and Han Mingji went to the Zhou Ancestral Hall on Duntou Street to give a lecture on winter studies, where Guan's students Chen Gaodi, Chen Guantao, and Zhang Bozhen were trained. At the end of the Qing Dynasty, the new style of school arose, guangxu thirty-four years (1908), the private two corners of the primary primary school and the two corners of the higher primary school hall in the northwest corner of the social school was established, Rong Zuoqiu (Rong Geng's uncle) as the first principal, the students are Rong Zhaogeng (Rong Geng), Rong Zhaoxin, Rong Zhaozu and so on. There are also many private schools on Kiting Street, and the famous one is the "ZiQu Private School" set up by the Luo family in the private residence. Deng Bai, Lu Jingguang, Zhang Shouqi and other well-known scholars have been taught here.

Deng Bai is also one of the famous scholars who came out of Zhiting Street, born in 1906 in Guancheng, Dongguan. Tang was a family of traditional Chinese medicine, but Deng Bai loved to paint since childhood, and at the age of seven he studied painting with the painter Liang Jingxin. Liang Jingxin's father was a disciple of Ju Lian, the originator of the Lingnan School, and his family collected many "Erju" (Ju Lian, Ju Chao) paintings, and the young Deng Bai was able to copy the works of "Erju", laying a solid foundation for becoming an outstanding flower and bird painter and calligrapher in the future.

Deng Bai has been engaged in art education all his life, and is a famous arts and crafts educator, ceramic expert and painter of flowers and birds in China. His research achievements in ceramic theory have filled the gap in the history of Chinese ceramics. He had an important influence on art education in Dongguan, and after returning to Dongguan in his later years to settle down, he brought many outstanding Guan artists with him. In his later years, Deng Bai donated 92 pieces (sets) of his calligraphy and painting works to the Dongguan Museum, devoting himself to the cultural construction of his hometown.

However, for various reasons, Deng Bai's former residence on Zhiting Street has not been preserved. Uncle He, the administrator of the Rong Geng Former Residence Memorial Hall, told reporters that Mr. Deng Bai's students had come to Zhiting Street several times to look for Mr. Rong's former residence.

The exhibition aims to preserve local cultural memory

The reporter learned in the interview that in recent years, in addition to repairing and protecting Rong Geng's former residence, Dongguan Guancheng has also attached great importance to the collation and collection of relevant historical works, and has published five series of Dongguan large-scale local literature summary "Dongguan Historical Works Series" including "Complete Works of Rong Geng", "Complete Works of Rong Zhaozu", "Collected Works of Rong Yuan", "Collection of Jinshi Studies of Rong Yuan", etc.

Among them, the "Rong Yuan JinshiXue Anthology" was first published on October 20, and its collation work began in 2012 and lasted for nine years. The book is a compilation of Rong Yuan's lifelong academic activities, the first systematic collection of her works and articles in the fields of gold stone, archaeology, book reviews, folklore, academic news, etc., divided into three volumes of epigraphy, archaeology and academic news, with a word count of more than 1.8 million words, compiled into 4 volumes.

On the occasion of the first release of "Rong Yuan JinshiXue Anthology", Guancheng Library specially planned the local humanistic exhibition - "Zhiting Street: Cultural Memory of a City" exhibition, in the form of pictures and documents, for the first time, tried to excavate and sort out the groups of scholars who had lived and studied in modern and modern Zhiting Street, systematically sorted out their academic achievements, analyzed the relatives behind them, teacher education, and contributions to the culture of their hometown, aiming to retain local cultural memory and cultivate the humanistic spirit of Dongguan.

Retaining the historical context is not only to inherit the culture and continue the history, but also to better move towards the future. As the origin of Dongguan City, Guancheng will continue to dig deep, sort out and connect historical and cultural resources, do a good job in dongguan cultural inheritance and revitalization, create a historical and cultural block that can retain nostalgia, fully display dongguan's local cultural characteristics, and continue the urban context.
