Guangzhou, 9 Dec (Xinhua) -- According to a report by the Guangzhou Huangpu Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau on the 9th, the bureau's animal quarantine personnel recently intercepted a large number of live Japanese humpback ants from chicken powder from the United States, which was the first interception at the Huangpu port. The bureau took timely epidemic prevention measures and carried out effective pest treatment of the goods in accordance with the regulations.

Most of the imported meat and bone meal is containerized bulk cargo, which is highly susceptible to microbial pollution and other external pollution, and the detection rate of the epidemic is high. The chicken bone meal imported from the United States totaled 10 containers, weighing 197 tons. After opening and inspecting one of the cabinets, the inspection and quarantine personnel found that there were a large number of live ants in the cabinet door, and after intercepting several live ants at the scene, they quickly closed the cabinet door to prevent the ants from climbing outside, and immediately took epidemic prevention measures. The Whampoa Bureau Testing Center identified the live ant as a Japanese bow-backed ant.

The Japanese humpback ant is widely distributed throughout China, the former Soviet Union, Japan, North Korea, South Korea and Southeast Asia. The Japanese bow-backed ant is large and strong, generally 2-5 mm long, and the Japanese bow-backed ant is 12-14 mm long. The food is small insects, honeydew and plant secretions, which are extremely adaptable. Although non-toxic, it is the first time that such a large number of live ants have been detected in imported meat and bone meal at the Whampoa port. At present, the bureau has supervised the batch of meat and bone meal as a key monitoring safety risk, and is allowed to enter the market circulation link after confirming the qualification. (End)
