The red-headed grebe in the Field Manual of Chinese Birds No. 1076 (scientific name: stachyris ruficeps), is a small bird with a body length of 10-12 cm.

The top of the head is brownish red, and the upper body is pale olive brown stained green. The chin, throat, and thorax of the lower body are light grayish yellow, the chin and throat have thin black feathers, and the sides of the body are pale olive brown.
It feeds mainly on insects, but occasionally eats small amounts of plant fruits and seeds.
It is often seen alone or in pairs, and sometimes in small groups or in mixed groups with brown-necked hook-billed grebes or other birds.
Fly around or jump up and down under the forest or among the branches and leaves of the forest edge. Nests usually nest on dense shrubs, bamboo, grass and stacked bundles of firewood.
World distribution: Distributed in China, Sikkim, Bhutan, Assam, India, Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam.
