Rats are infested in parts of Australia, and what you see is becoming increasingly frightening, with reports of rat cannibalism and farms in disarray.
In New South Wales and Queensland, in eastern Australia, millions of rats roam schools, homes and hospitals, causing havoc while the lingering pungent smell that permeates the air is suffocating. There are also reports of rats gnawing on the remains of their dead counterparts, and some even predict that within a few weeks the infestation will spread to Sydney through freight trucks and food crates.
Although the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Drug Administration has not yet approved the use of highly toxic chemicals to eradicate rodent infestation, NSW is ready for this. Local authorities have prepared 5,000 liters of the most toxic rodenticide, bromadiolone, intended to be used in 20 killing sites in the most severe local areas.

In August 2020, an aircraft spread rodenticide over a rapeseed field near Gunnida, New South Wales.
Rat infestation also threatens Australia's $51 billion agriculture. After the grain harvest last season, the rat population also exploded. According to Matthew Madden, chairman of the Food Committee of the NSW Farmers' Association, some farmers are reluctant to sow winter crops for the time being, fearing that the newly sown seeds and eventually ripening grains will be infested with rats.
