Born on March 16, 1940 in Parma, Italy, Bertolucci's father was a poet and film critic, and in this family environment, Bertolucci won the Vilaregio Prize for Literature for his first published literary work, and soon after, Bertolucci became the chief assistant of the famous Italian director Pasolini, and his talent in film was gradually excavated.
In 1962, at the age of 21 and before graduating from college, Bertolucci directed his first film, Death, which tells the suspenseful story of a prostitute who kills. In 1964, he directed the famous work "On the Eve of the Revolution"
After becoming famous, Bertolucci began to use Hollywood stars as protagonists, and in 1972, the last tango in Paris was starred by Marlon Brando and Maria Snyder. The film was controversial for its extremely × scenes, and some even thought that the heroine was actually raped while filming (the actor denied it in an interview). Although the film was nominated for Best Director and Best Actor at the 46th Academy Awards, the film was banned from the public in Italy because of the plot of chicken × rape, the mother film was ordered to be destroyed, and the director was also stripped of citizenship by the court for 5 years and sentenced to 4 months of suspended imprisonment.
In "The Last Tango in Paris", Marlon Brando plays Paul, an American writer in his fifties, who settles in Paris, where he meets the young girl Jeanne after his wife commits suicide, and soon meets in an empty apartment, and soon begins to frantically describe three days and three nights. Despite Paul's abusive tendencies, Jeanne is attracted to his melancholy temperament and gradually falls in love with the mysterious man. Jeanne is soon to be married, but her fiancé snubbs her for her love of film careers, and is subjected to even more brutal chickens as she seeks warmth from Paul. When Jeanne begins a new life, a chance encounter with Paul makes him chase her again, hopeless love, and eventually the other two go to ruin.
Bertolucci was politically active and a glorious Marxist, and there was no shortage of political and historical concerns in his films. In 1977, Betruch and the French and former West Germany co-produced the epic blockbuster "1900", which tells the story of the friendship and struggle of two men born of different classes, Alfred, the grandson of a farmer, and Olmo, the grandson of a tenant, during the 45 years of the turn of the century. They were born on the same day, green plum bamboo horses (fog), but because of their different origins, they have a completely different outlook on life. Later, Olmo eventually became a communist fighter, and Alfred sided with fascism... Through the lives of the two male protagonists, Bertolucci reflects half a century of social change and complex class struggle.
In 1987, the "Last Emperor", which is most familiar to Chinese film fans, was born, this Italian director who has a strong sense of affection for China, with a unique perspective to show the love and political life of Puyi, the last feudal emperor in China, from the age of three when Puyi became emperor, he left his peers behind, after experiencing a lot of history, he finally became an ordinary citizen. Bertolucci's masterpieces in the nineties were The Sheltered Sky, and the trilogy l'-esppit edl'exil (1992), dedomeinin ditvoor-st (1993) and the true life of antonio (1994), and directed the film Little Buddha in 1994. The story tells that after the end of World War II, An American couple who have been married for ten years, Porter and Kit, their marriage is in crisis, they cheat, so they travel to the Sahara in North Africa with their friend Rayner. In the new century, the film industry has made a big news, and has given the masters a propositional composition, called "Ten Minutes of Aging", inviting famous directors around the world to let each of them guide a short film of about ten minutes, and use their stylized film techniques to interpret the meaning of time. Bertolucci's work is included in The Ten Masters: The Cello, in which he uses an Indian fable to show in ten minutes the life of a man like water, full of philosophy. There are also works by Godard and others in the collection.
Dream of Paris is a 2003 drama by Bertolucci, in which the expression of sex and politics is quite bold, set against the backdrop of a student social activity in France in 1968, telling how two men and a woman explore the course of history in lust.
