In 582, he was built in Southern Chen for fourteen years. In the first month of the year, Emperor Xuan became seriously ill, and the crown prince Chen Shubao, the King of Sixing, Chen Shuling, and the King of Changsha, Chen Shujian, accompanied him all the time. The thoughts of the crown prince Chen Shubao could not be known to others, perhaps the grief of facing his father's imminent departure and the joy of soon ascending the throne as emperor. But what King Chen Shuling thinks at this moment may be glimpsed from the records of historical records.

At that time, Chen Shuling instructed the official in charge of decoction: "The knife that cuts the medicine is really too blunt, you give me sharpening." "In just one sentence, we can unearth an extremely rich amount of information. King Sixing needed a knife, and it was a very sharp knife, what did he do with it? Is it just to cut medicine for the father who is about to die? Soon, Chen Shuling personally gave the answer.

A few days later, Emperor Xuan died, and Chen Shuling quickly found his attendants and ordered him to go outside to get his sword. Unfortunately, the anxious prince apparently overestimated the tacit understanding between him and his attendants. The attendant was confused, and thought that King Sixing had asked him to take a wooden sword used by the upper dynasty. This made Chen Shuling move his liver and fire. And all of this was seen by Chen Shujian, the king of Changsha. Chen Shujian carefully analyzed what he saw and came to a terrible conclusion, that is, the second brother had different ambitions and was afraid that it would be unfavorable to the prince. Therefore, Uncle Chen was determined to pay attention to Chen Shuling's every move at all times, just in case.

At this moment, Crown Prince Chen Shubao was expressing his grief with tears. He crouched down beside the coffin of the emperor and cried loudly. Suddenly, a sharp pain came from his neck, and Empress Liu, the mother of the prince, could see clearly, and just now, Chen Shuling, the king of Sixing, took a file and slashed at the prince. Empress Liu didn't have time to think too much, and she quickly pounced on it, using her body to cover the prince. The mad Chen Shuling had lost his mind and slashed at the empress with a sword. At this extremely critical moment, the prince's nursing mother Wu Shi ran behind ShuLing and grabbed his arm.

At this moment, Chen Shujian, who had always been defensive, finally reacted, and he flew forward and strangled Chen Shuling's neck deadly. Chen Shuling struggled and pestered for a long time before he could get out. At this time, I went to look for the prince again, where there was still any trace of him. Chen Shuling rushed out of the palace in a hurry, and quickly gathered his men to prepare for rebellion. Chen Shujian and Empress Liu immediately made a decision, and in the name of the crown prince, ordered the general Xiao Maha to lead the army to quell the rebellion. Xiao Maha led hundreds of people to rush all the way to Dongfu City, and then garrisoned the west gate of the city.

Chen Shuling was well aware of Xiao Maha's strength, and he sent someone to meet Xiao Maha in an attempt to persuade the veteran to turn to him. Xiao Maha told the messenger that if he wanted to submit himself, he must have King Sixing's confidants ask for him to see him in person. Chen Shuling, who lacked political experience, did not know that there was deception, and immediately asked his henchmen to meet Xiao Maha, and as a result, Xiao Maha did not show any mercy and directly killed Chen Shuling's henchmen. Chen Shuling was weak, and seeing that the general trend had gone, he quickly packed his bags and prepared to escape from the South Gate. Xiao Maha chased after him and finally beheaded the rebellious prince.

The bloody coup d'état, which led to fratricidal rivalry over the throne, was quickly suppressed. Crown Prince Chen Shubao naturally ascended the throne, ushering in the reign of the last emperor of the Southern Dynasty.

Chen Shubao, the most heartless emperor in history, actually asked his enemies for official work after the destruction of the country and his family

Chen Shubao did not know how to govern the country, compared to the tedious government affairs of the imperial court, he loved beauty singing and dancing, and was more willing to spend his life in the poetry of the wind and snow. The young emperor was taken captive to Chang'an by Western Wei forces as a teenager and held hostage in Yongcheng. Although he was trapped in the north for a long time, his life was quite rich, and the northern dynasty gave him high preferential treatment. Such a living environment has shaped his character, Chen Shubao is doomed to be unable to understand the hardships of his predecessors' entrepreneurship, and he will never be able to realize his responsibility, in his view, the pursuit of ultimate happiness is a privilege given to him by Heaven.

So when the wound made by Chen Shuling healed, the new emperor held a banquet without stopping. He recruited a large number of literati and asked them to play music and poetry for themselves, less than a year after the funeral of the former emperor. The chancellor Mao Xi was not accustomed to it and wanted to advise, but the emperor was already drunk. So he had to pretend to have a sudden heart disease, passed out under the steps, and was finally carried out of the palace door. After the banquet, the emperor woke up drunk and suddenly became suspicious of Mao Xi. He said to his favorite minister Jiang Zong, "I really regret calling this person here, he is not sick, presumably he is not used to what I have done, so I pretended to be sick and made such a show." The more the emperor thought about it, the more irritable he became, and he felt that Liu Maoxi's presence was really an eyesore, so he demoted him to the local area and completely drove him out of the center of power.

Alienating these ministers who hindered his enjoyment made Chen Shubao feel happy, like cutting off the shackles of a prisoner. After ascending the throne, the emperor, who was keen on a life of luxury, quickly expressed his dissatisfaction with his courtiers, and the simple Chen Guo palace was unbearable for him. He ordered people to build the three pavilions of Linchun, Jieqi, and Wangxian in front of the Linguang Hall. The pavilion is tens of meters high, made of heavy sandalwood window sills, decorated with gold and jade pearls. In these palatial palaces, Chen Shubao and his favorite concubine Zhang Lihua and others sang night and night, buying drunk every day. In their eyes, the world is too peaceful, everywhere is at peace, if you do not enjoy yourself in a limited time, that is the greatest waste of life.

But is the world really too peaceful? If you pull the perspective to the north of the Yangtze River, people will find that Yang Jian, who replaced the Northern Zhou and established the Great Sui Dynasty, is rubbing his fists. Unlike Chen Shubao, Yang Jian has always had great ambitions to pacify the four seas, and in his view, eliminating chen guo, which has divided Jiangnan, is his ultimate goal. After investigation, he was pleasantly surprised to find that this goal seemed to be difficult to achieve, because when he was actively preparing, his opponent Chen Shubao was sleeping in the warm arms of Aifei. Yang Jian issued an edict announcing Chen Shubao's twenty major crimes, and then copied them on paper and spread them around the world. In addition, he also ordered people to build warships, with Yang Guang, the king of Jin, and others as the marshals of the march, and the commanders-in-chief Han Huhu and He Ruobi led 510,000 troops to take Jiangnan directly.

The war reports from the front quickly reached the center, but no one at all paid attention to the court. Only the servant Yuan Xian shot and asked for troops to resist. However, Chen Shubao did not agree, and he drank and had fun as usual. When the Sui army deepened and the various places were in a hurry, the emperor still maintained a rather optimistic attitude, and he said to his attendants: "In the past, the Qi army and the Zhou army attacked many times, and each time they did not return. Why? Because the Yangtze River is dangerous and divides the north and south, when the Sui army arrives at the Yangtze River, can it still fly with wings? This is clearly because the general wants to ask for credit, so he made up the ghost story that the border is in a hurry. Chen Shubao was proud and thought that his analysis was seamless. In his view, the Yangtze River is an insurance that locks his wealth, glory and status firmly, and others must not encroach on it.

Unfortunately, judging from the later facts, this insurance is not solid.

Chen Shubao, the most heartless emperor in history, actually asked his enemies for official work after the destruction of the country and his family

In the first month of 589, sui soldiers crossed the Yangtze River from Guangling, sui captured Han Huhu and captured the quarry, and Yang Guang, the king of Jin, led a large army to garrison Taoye Mountain. Only then did Chen Shubao finally recognize the facts, and he hurriedly gathered his courtiers to discuss a strategy for retreating from the enemy. However, it was already too late, the Sui army won successive battles, and with a single blow, Jingkou and Guyi were lost one after another. At that time, the capital City jiankang still had an army of 100,000, but Chen Shubao did not understand the military at all, could not dispatch, and he had no choice but to entrust the major affairs of the military state to Shi Wenqing to deal with. Shi Wenqing was stupid and incompetent, and the correct suggestions of the generals were completely rejected. The entire Chen Kingdom was thus in chaos, and its demise was inevitable.

In the end, the powerful Sui army attacked Jiankang, they searched around for Chen Shubao's figure, and finally found him in a dry well in the palace, and he was pulled up by the Sui army along with him, as well as his concubines. At this point, Chen Guo declared its demise, and the era of division that lasted for nearly three hundred years came to an end. At the same time, Chen Shubao's personal fate will surely change completely with the occurrence of this major event.

Life in the Sui Dynasty was not as difficult as imagined, and the hostage experience in childhood seemed to allow Chen Shubao to quickly adapt to the role change. Yang Jian was extremely kind to this subjugated monarch, and often invited him to banquets, and in order not to touch his homesickness, Jiangnan music was absolutely not allowed to be played at the banquet. In Yang Jian's view, Chen Shubao lost the country, Aifei was killed, and the situation of the destruction of the country and the family was bound to make him sad all the time. However, the facts in front of him are completely contrary to his assumptions. Chen Shubao did not have the pain of subjugating the country, the hatred of losing his wife, he was leisurely and leisurely all day long, drinking and having fun as usual. Once, the person in charge of guarding him reported to Yang Jian that Chen Shubao had complained that he had no official position and that it was really inconvenient to enter the dynasty, and that he should ask His Majesty the Emperor to reward him with an official title. After Yang Jian heard this, he was shocked and sighed: "Chen Shubao is really heartless. ”

Yang Jian once commented on Chen Shubao, saying: "Chen Shubao's failures are all related to drinking, and if he could use the kung fu of writing poetry and drinking to deal with major state affairs, how could he end up where he is today?" When He Ruobi attacked Jingkou, the border pass was in a hurry, and Chen Shubao only knew how to drink alcohol and completely ignored it. Later, Gao Hao attacked Chen Guo's palace and found that the urgent documents were thrown under the bed, and even the seal was not removed, which was really ridiculous and stupid. ”

In November of the fourth year of Sui Renshou (604), Chen Shubao fell ill and died in Luoyang at the age of 52. He was posthumously honored as a grand general and the Duke of Great Wall County, with the posthumous title of 炀. This was a very bad nickname, and the new emperor Yang Guang used this word to sum up Chen Shubao's life. It just didn't make Yang Guang think that a few years later, this word had also become his own nickname. And in the history books, when it comes to chi, people often think of Yang Guang, not Chen Shubao. As for Chen Shubao, everyone is more accustomed to calling him Lord Chen Hou. Of course, this is another story.

Over the years, people have had mixed evaluations of Chen Hou's performance after he entered the Sui Dynasty, and some people think that he is like Yang Jian said, he has no heart and liver, and he does not feel the pain of the country and the loss of his wife. But there are also some people who believe that what Chen Shubao is doing is actually a kind of political wisdom, as the king of the subjugated country, he wants to protect himself at the hands of the enemy, of course, he must pretend to be stupid, and always create an image of his heart and lungs, so that he can survive in the sinister political game. But these are no longer important, perhaps Chen Shubao is a successful person in the field of how to save his life, but it is undeniable that he is an absolutely failed monarch. At the critical moment of the country's life and death, he did nothing, and his entire imperial career was immersed in the melancholy sound of "Yushu Backyard Flower", indulging in the pleasure brought by alcohol, and sleeping in the gentle arms of beautiful people.
