After independence, Grenada began to have good relations with the United States, but the new Prime Minister of Grenada, Maurice Bishop, who was elected in 1979, actively developed relations with the Soviet Union and Cuba, and received a large amount of economic and military assistance from the Soviet Union and Cuba. This caused dissatisfaction in the United States and threatened to use force against it; under pressure from the United States, Bishop felt the need to ease relations with the United States and personally went to the United States to sign an understanding agreement with it, but this pragmatic measure caused dissatisfaction among the pro-Soviet factions in the country, and Bishop was secretly shot by Deputy Prime Minister Austin and others. The new administration was extremely pro-Soviet, which seriously threatened U.S. interests.

On October 25, 1983, the United States decided to overthrow Grenada by force, a campaign code-named Operation Fury.
