Incoming New York City Mayor Eric Adams said Thursday that he would pay his first three salaries in bitcoin when he took office in January.
"In New York, we always get bigger, so when I become mayor, I'm going to receive my first three salaries in Bitcoin. New York City will be at the center of the cryptocurrency industry and other fast-growing innovation industries! Just wait! Adams wrote in a tweet Thursday.
The tweet was a response to Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, who on Tuesday promised to pay his next salary in bitcoin. Earlier this week, Suarez won re-election by a large margin.
Adams, now the brooklyn district chairman and retired New York City police chief, has supported cryptocurrencies throughout the campaign and won in a poll earlier this week. This support is noteworthy because New York City, despite being a major financial center, has some of the strictest cryptocurrency rules in the country, and most types of cryptocurrency transactions require a license.
