1. Lotus pond construction
Shallow water lotus planting should use shallow water pools to facilitate planting management and water level management. Common shallow ponds include mud ponds, mulching ponds, cement ponds and rice fields, etc., the pond is 50 to 60 cm deep (including 30 cm of growing soil layer), the height of the pond dam is 30 to 40 cm, and the area of each shallow pool is 1 to 2 mu. In the case of sufficient local water sources or good water retention performance of lotus ponds, it is generally possible to directly plant mud ponds or transformed rice fields. If the water retention performance of the lotus pond is poor and the local water source is insufficient, it is necessary to use mulching ponds and cement ponds for planting to retain water and prevent leakage of fertilizer.
2. Lotus seed selection
Lotus root varieties suitable for shallow water cultivation should be selected, such as Elian No. 5 (3735 Lotus Root), Elian No. 7 (Pearl Root), Elian No. 9 (Jumbo Lotus Root) and Thai Flower Lotus. In order to ensure the budding rate and good growth of lotus seeds, it is necessary to choose as many manually mined lotus seeds as possible without major injuries in appearance.
3. Planting scheme
Shallow water lotus planting is generally in the middle and late March to the beginning of May this period, before planting should first level the bottom of the lotus pond, and then apply 4,000 pounds of fermented farm manure per mu as the bottom fertilizer, and carry out moderate rotary tillage to spread the bottom fertilizer evenly and increase soil looseness. The amount of seeds per mu is 400 to 600 jin (the water gun lotus seed needs to be increased by 30%), and the carbendazim solution is soaked for 5 minutes before planting to kill various pathogenic bacteria, and the plant row spacing is mostly 1.5×2 meters.
4. Fertilization scheme
When the lotus root grows 2 to 3 vertical leaves, 30 to 40 kg of compound fertilizer per mu are applied; when the lotus root leaves are about to be sealed, 80 to 100 kg of compound fertilizer are applied per mu; after the lotus root enters the expansion stage (that is, the peak of flowering and fruit), 40 to 60 kg of compound fertilizer per mu is applied according to the growth situation.
5. Water level management
After the lotus seed is planted, the water level is maintained at 3 to 5 cm before the vertical leaves grow out; after the standing leaves grow out and before the sealing, the water level is maintained at 5 to 10 cm; after the standing leaves are sealed and before the lotus root harvests, the water level is maintained at 10 to 30 cm; the water level of the lotus root needs to overwinter, and the water level shall not be less than 15 cm.
6. Field management
For the weeds, aquatic weeds, sponges and duckweeds that grow around the lotus pond and in the water, it is necessary to use artificial or medicinal methods to remove them in time, of course, 1 to 3 grass carp can be put into each mu for control, and it is also necessary to do a good job in the prevention and control of diseases and insect pests such as aphids, dead leaf moths, rotting diseases and blight.
