Recently, there have been a number of incidents of counterfeit alcohol poisoning in the Russian Oblast of Orenburg, which has killed 35 people and found methanol in the victims' bodies. According to the Global Times quoted by the Russian "Izvestia" on the 11th, a total of 67 people were hospitalized for fake alcohol poisoning in Orenburg State. The local hospital verified that the victim had drunk fake alcohol containing methanol. Unlike ethanol, which is contained in regular alcoholic beverages, methanol is quite toxic, and even very small doses can lead to blindness, while methanol concentrations detected in the remains of some victims are 3-5 times the lethal amount.
Since the amount of fake liquor that has been sold is unknown, the local government decided to let residents go to supermarkets and exchange their possible fake liquor for food, including sausages. The police said on the 11th that the suspect in the production and sale of fake liquor in the Orenburg area was industrial alcohol purchased in Ufa.
Russia's "Viewpoint" said on the 11th that almost every day in Russia, people died of drinking fake wine. Commenting on the incident, Mironov, chairman of Russia's "Just Russia-For Truth Party," pointed out that the state should monopolize the production and sale of ethanol, thus effectively preventing the circulation of fake liquor. In fact, in December 2016, there was a large-scale poisoning incident in the Russian city of Irkutsk due to drinking fake alcohol, resulting in 77 deaths, the most serious death of fake alcohol in Russia in recent years.
