Chen Shijun (1905.11.5 – 1988.1.25), a native of Xiushui County (now Xiuzhou District), was born in Xiangmendi, a book.

Grandfather used to show talent. His father, Chen Jian (陈健), also spelled Zhigong, graduated from Fudan University in Shanghai and founded a primary school after returning to his hometown. After middle age, he moved to Jiaxing City with his family, co-founded Silk Satin Zhuang with people, served as general manager, and later served as the president of Jiaxing County Bank, becoming a well-known figure in jiaxing business at that time.

Rice cultivation has a long history in Jiaxing, so it is also a place where rice borers are often rampant. In the thirteenth year of the Republic of China (1924), Chen Zhigong participated in the establishment of Jiaxing's first non-governmental borer control organization, the Borer Control Committee, to guide farmers to scientifically control borers.

When Chen Shihua was young, he lived in the countryside and witnessed the miserable situation of the peasant borer after the disaster, and his heart was full of sympathy. After Chen Zhigong established the anti-borer organization, he often talked about borer infestation and scientific methods of moth control at home, which left a deep impression on Chen Shijun's heart and laid an ideological foundation for his future specialization in entomology.

In 1919, Chen Shijun attended jiaxing no. 2 higher primary school, when the anti-imperialist and anti-feudal "May Fourth" patriotic movement broke out in China. At that time, the school went on strike, and teachers and students took to the streets to march and publicize. Chen Shijun also became a member of the patriotic torrent, he and his classmates took to the streets to act, propaganda self-improvement to save the country, patriotism, science to save the country sprouted in his mind.

In 1924, Chen Shijun graduated from high school and applied for the Biology Department of Fudan University, and was admitted with honors.

In 1925, Chen Shihua, who was studying at Fudan University, participated in the "May Thirtieth" anti-imperialist movement, served as the leader of the bicycle communication team, delivered messages, was detained by the authorities, and was later released on bail by Lee Teng-hui, president of Fudan University.

In 1928, after graduating from the Biology Department of Fudan University, Chen Shihua went to France to study beetle classification in the Insect Laboratory of the Musée de d'éturbé de éxicon in Paris.

In 1934, Chen Received his Ph.D. from the University of Paris, and his doctoral dissertation ,"Systematic Study of the Subfamily Pyloaceae in China and Northern Vietnam", won the 1935 Bassay Prize of the Entomological Society of France. Since then, Chen Shijun has begun to engage in the research of entomology all his life.

In August 1934, Chen Shijun returned to China and was successively employed as a researcher at the Institute of Animals and Plants and the Institute of Zoology of the Academia Sinica.

After 1949, he successively served as a researcher and director of the Insect Research Laboratory of the Institute of Experimental Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and a researcher and director of the Institute of Entomology, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

In 1962, the Institute of Zoology and the Institute of Entomology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences merged and named it the Institute of Zoology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, with Chen Shihua as a researcher and director, and from 1982 to his death in 1988, he served as the honorary director of the institute. Chen Shijun has been engaged in the study of insect classification all his life, and the main research objects of the coleoptera leaf beetle family include leaf carapace, jumping nail, fluorescent leaf carapace, xiao leaf carapace, hidden head leaf carapace, iron armor, turtle carapace and other taxa, in addition to the diptera, truthful flies, eye flies, nail flies, cattle flies, etc., also did a lot of work.

His research also involves insect behavior, insect evolution, ancient insects, the boundary-level classification of organisms, species problems, taxonomic principles, evolutionary theories, and so on. During his lifetime, he published more than 700 new species of insects and more than 60 new genera in China, Japan and Southeast Asia. Some of these are important pests of field crops and forests and fruit trees.

His systematic taxonomic research and the book Evolution and Taxonomy won the 1978 Science Conference Award and the 1978 Chinese Academy of Sciences Major Scientific and Technological Achievement Award.

In 1985, he edited the "Zoology of China: Insects Coleoptera Iron Beetle Family", including the description of 417 species in the four subfamily, and won the second prize of the National Natural Science Award. His article "The Evolution and Classification of the General Family of Leaf Beetles", which was read at the first International Symposium on Entomology at the 17th International Entomological Conference held in Hamburg in 1984, was appreciated by the participating scholars.

In the early 1950s, the Soviet biologist Lysenko published New Insights into Biological Species in Science, arguing that heredity is not only the function of a special substance called a gene, but also related to cells or all substances in the body.

It triggered a heated discussion on the issue of species in Soviet academia. At that time, Lysenko's remarks dominated the Chinese biological community, and his new insights were widely disseminated in China. The controversy in Soviet academia aroused great interest, and Chen Shijun also began to pay attention to the study of species problems at this time.

In August 1956, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Ministry of Higher Education jointly held a symposium on genetics in Qingdao, where the debate was very heated. Entrusted by the symposium, Chen Shijun made a speech entitled "On the Question of Species" at the meeting, using Darwin's theory of survival struggle and natural selection to refute Lysenko's view that "there is no struggle within species".

Since then, Chen Shijun has made a series of in-depth explorations on species problems, species classification principles and evolutionary laws, and made new contributions in theory.

Chen Shijun joined the Jiusan Society in 1952; in 1955, he was elected as a member of the Faculty of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

In addition to engaging in scientific research work and research institute director work, Chen Shijun also served as the director of the editorial board of "Zoology of China", the deputy director of the editorial board of "Encyclopedia of China Biology", the editorial board of "Science of China", the editor-in-chief of "Journal of Entomology" and "Journal of Animal Taxonomy", and served as the chairman of the Entomological Society of China, the vice chairman of the Agricultural Society of China, the standing committee member and honorary member of the China Association for Science and Technology;

He is also a member of the Second and Third National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and a deputy to the Third, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth National People's Congresses;

He joined the Communist Party of China in 1979.
