According to the Associated Press, Heat coach Eric Spollstra has accepted an invitation to join the U.S. men's basketball coaching staff to help them prepare for the Olympic Games in Las Vegas next month. Spolstra will be involved in coaching the U.S. Selection Team, whose players will be brought in for training and confrontations with Olympic teams.
"I'd love to be involved in this project," Spolstra said, "and I've always pushed myself to get better in the offseason." I'll visit people and so on. It will be a basketball immersion. Those dinners, those team meetings. For my current career stage, I think it's the perfect opportunity for a summer promotion. ”
This will be Spoelstra's first time in charge of the U.S. men's basketball team. He and U.S. coach Greg Popovich have been discussing the coaching opportunity for months, but it wasn't until the Heat were eliminated from the playoffs in the last week or two that the matter was decided.
Spoelstra said he was grateful to the top brass of the American Basketball Association for extending the invitation to him.
"I'm grateful to Bobo, Jerry (Colangelo) and Sean (Ford) for giving me this opportunity." Spoelstra said.
Spoelstra will not be involved in the Tokyo Olympics, and Popovich already has three assistant coaches: Warriors coach Steve Kerr, Villanova University coach Jay Wright, and former Eagles coach Ed Pierce.
The coaches and staff of the U.S. men's basketball team will arrive in Vegas first in early July, and the first stadium training program will begin on July 6, local time.
