Arvidas Sabonis (born 19 December 1964 in Kaunas, Lithuania) is a former Lithuanian professional basketball player who played as a center and retired in 2003. Sabonis won the 1988 Olympic Games with the Soviet Union and then led Lithuania to bronze medals at the 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games. Sabonis played for Kaunas while playing domestically, then spent a year with Soviet champions Spartan Moscow, and when allowed to play abroad, he spent six more glorious seasons in Spain. He joined the NBA Portland Trail Blazers in the 1995–1996 season, where he ended his career.
In the annals of basketball history, he is known as the most talented center on the planet, the most legendary giant, but also the most tragic genius. In 1992, the Dream Team, forged by NBA stars, replaced the U.S. national team of college students and amateurs, king's landing in Barcelona — before which U.S. professional basketball players had never been on the Olympic court — thus opening a new page in the history of Olympic basketball. The reason these arrogant NBA superstars gave up their vacations and came to Europe tirelessly was a bitter failure, or to exaggerate, because of one person: Arvidas Sabonis. In the semifinals of the men's basketball team at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games, this Li Taowan led the former Soviet men's basketball team to simply and neatly kill the American team, which was said to be impossible to beat - this is one of the few "stains" in the history of American basketball.
