Generally speaking, we divide portrait painting into three periods: one is from ancient times to the Western Han Dynasty, one is from the Six Dynasties to the Tang and Song Dynasties, and the other is the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. Today we will appreciate the portrait paintings of the Ming and Qing dynasties.
During this period, portraiture developed at its peak. And the Ming and Qing dynasties are the closest to us, and the most preserved works are preserved. Although there were many portrait painters and portraits in the Han and Tang dynasties, very few real works have been handed down, so a large number of portraits we see now are actually concentrated in the Ming and Qing dynasties.
