Morphological characteristics
The whole (even the head) is scaled, and the surface of the scales is slightly rougher, like felt hair. The side lines are complete. The hypopharyngeal bone is not bound, and the maxilla is not covered by the bone in front of the eye. The plough bone and palate bone usually have teeth. The fins of the pectoral fins are mostly similar and divergent. The dorsal fin is single, with a soft fin with a longer fin and 3 spines.

Habits of life
Most are marine and a few are freshwater. Most of them are diurnal fish, and due to the large number of species, they have a rather complex ecological layer. Most of them are benthic fish species with territorial and mimetic behaviors. The vast majority feed on fish, shrimp, crabs, end-footed, etc., and are ferocious predators. The subfamily Pseudanthias and Sacura are gregarious, foraging in water layers during the day, feeding on plankton, and hiding in caves between coral reefs at night.
The body color of the species is bright and varied, and there are phenomena such as dichrobial and female to male transformation. Some fish species, such as parrotfish and bulbophyllum, also have the ecological adaptation behavior of social class status control phenomena. Some are nocturnal fish that live alone in the holes at the bottom of coral reefs or rock reefs during the day and forage outside at night, such as the black perch (Grammistes), and when frightened, they secrete a large amount of mucus on the surface of the body, which has a soap bubble effect and contains poisonous grammistin, so it is not edible.
Geographical distribution
It is widely distributed in tropical to temperate waters, and a few are freshwater species.
