It is a common edible fish in China, with a grayish-black body color, a darker back and the top of the head, a pale abdomen, irregular black patches on the side of the body, and 2 rows of black markings on the side of the head. Not only can the fish grow large, but it often inhabits still or micro-flowing water with aquatic grass overgrowth and soft bottom mud. The body resembles a snake and slowly moves forward. It also has the ability to move and walk on land, leaving the water for up to 3 to 4 days when the temperature range is 10°C to 15°C.
