Bird of Paradise Wing Butterfly, Pearl of the Orient Butterfly... Do you know these endangered butterflies?

On March 9, chongqing post office customs under Chongqing Customs intercepted two endangered butterfly specimens, a total of six, during the inspection of incoming mail

As shown in the figure, at first glance, many people will think that 1, 2, 3 is a category, and 4, 5, and 6 are another category. However, the answer is not.

Ms. Kong, senior agronomist of Chongqing Customs, introduced that 1 (female) and 4 (male) are called birds of paradise wing butterflies, also known as bliss bird wing butterflies, beautiful silk-tailed bird wing butterflies, is a butterfly with a high degree of sexual heteromorphism, and is also one of the most valuable butterflies known.

The bird of paradise is mainly found in southeastern Papua New Guinea and its surrounding islands. Their populations are threatened by habitat destruction and local logging in Papua New Guinea and were listed in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) in 1973 with a protection level of Category II and a protected species in Papua New Guinea.

As for the 2, 3, 5 and 6 shown in the figure, it is the golden green bird wing butterfly, also known as the Pearl of the Orient Butterfly, which is the national butterfly of Indonesia and one of the eight major butterflies in the world. It is found from Malacca to Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and northern Australia.

It is important to note that 2 (female) and 5 (male) are a "couple", and 3 (female) and 6 (male) are another "couple". As the saying goes, the layman looks at the bustle, and the insider looks at the doorway. For the identification of butterflies, it is mainly necessary to observe the wings, wing veins and markings, from which conclusions can be drawn.

These butterflies are all species regulated by Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). Import and export shall submit an import and export license for endangered species in accordance with regulations, and it is forbidden to transport, carry or mail in and out of the country without obtaining an import and export license for endangered species.

This is the first time that Chongqing Customs has intercepted imported animal specimens from the postal route since the launch of the "National Sword 2020" operation of the General Administration of Customs, and at present, Chongqing Customs has made follow-up treatment of the above specimens in accordance with the law.

Chongqing Customs reminds that according to cites of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora and the relevant provisions of China's laws and regulations, the import and export of endangered wild animals and plants and their products should obtain a legal import and export certificate from the national endangered species import and export administration. According to cites of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora and the Law of the People's Republic of China on the Protection of Wild Animals, in addition to holding a concession import and export certificate, any mode of trade or the act of carrying or mailing endangered species and their products into or out of the country is illegal. The Customs will deal with it in accordance with the relevant regulations, and those whose circumstances are serious and constitute a crime will be investigated for criminal liability in accordance with law.
