Sulawesi, next time we will come back

Liu Yongqiang

Sulawesi, formerly known as Celebes, is a large island in central Indonesia and the 11th largest island in the world, with a total land area of 174,600 square kilometers. Sulawesi is a strangely shaped island, resembling a capital letter "K", jutting out of four peninsulas to the northeast, east, southeast and south. With many high mountains and deep valleys and few plains, it is the island with the largest proportion of mountainous area in Indonesia.

Due to its unique geographical location, and the late human development in the past, this is a paradise for wildlife. Sulawesi is located on the Wallace Line, a biological line that distinguishes Asia from Oceania, where both the Flora and Fauna of the Eastern and New Zealand Realms are present. Sulawesi is known to have 127 species of mammals, of which 79 are endemic to the island and do not exist in other parts of the world. Birds are also endemic to 34% of the species.
