The average weight of the Brown-capped Sparrowhawk, latin for the scientific name Alcippe brunnea, is about 16.0 grams. Slightly larger (13 cm) brown sparrowhawk. The crown is tan, resembling a brown-throated sparrowhawk with no brown neck lines and a yellowish-brown forehead. The lower body skin is yellow, distinguished from the chestnut-headed sparrowhawk in both wings pure brown. It is distinguished from the brown-winged sparrowhawk mainly in the absence of white eyebrow lines. Iris - light brown or yellowish red; mouth - dark brown; feet - pink.

Chinese resident birds. The nominate subspecies are found in Taiwan, Sichuan, southern Shaanxi (Qinling), western Hubei, eastern Sichuan (Wujiang), northern Guizhou and northeastern Yunnan, widely found in southern and southeastern China, and limited to Hainan Island.
Its natural habitats include temperate forests, subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, subtropical or tropical high-altitude sparse shrublands, subtropical or tropical moist montane forests, and subtropical or tropical (lowland) dry sparse shrublands. The type origin of this species is in Taiwan.
