Carrie Lam: Any patriot can run for the Legislative Council, which will be more representative in the future

According to the Election Office of the Hong Kong SPECIAL Administrative Region Government, on November 2, the Election Officers for the 2021 Legislative Council Election received 11 nomination forms, including 1 for local constituencies, 6 for functional constituencies and 4 for the Election Commission constituencies, bringing the total number of nomination forms for this election to 37.

On the evening of the same day, Carrie Lam pointed out in a post on her personal social media account that after a sound election system, the number of seats in the Legislative Council has increased from 70 in two sectors to 90 in three sectors, which will provide more opportunities to participate in politics for people who aspire to engage in politics and serve the society. She firmly believes that the future Legislative Council will have greater representation, conform to the principle of more balanced participation, and embody a rational, pragmatic, and high-quality atmosphere for deliberating and discussing politics.

Mrs Lam said that the current Legislative Council has fully fulfilled its constitutional function of checking and balancing the executive in the past year, which is right and wrong, and the HKSAR Government is also happy to respond positively to the views of members and improve governance. "For example, from December 2020 to October 2021, a total of 14 bills were passed, involving a number of important amendments introduced by MPs and accepted by the Government."

Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor stressed: Improving the election system of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region is to ensure that "patriots govern Hong Kong, and by no means to turn the Legislative Council into a "hall of words." Anyone, regardless of political views, as long as they are patriots, can run for election according to law, be elected according to law, and join Hong Kong's political system; after serving as parliamentarians, they are also welcome to supervise the government's administration and criticize policies, so as to achieve good governance and better serve the citizens.

"The nomination period for the Legislative Council re-election is until November 12, and I encourage people with lofty ideals to seize the opportunity to actively participate in the election, encourage the Election Commission to actively nominate patriots to run, and encourage qualified voters to carefully consider the candidates' platform and vision for Hong Kong, and to vote enthusiastically on December 19 to elect the best and the best for Hong Kong." Carrie Lam concluded.
