Winter is coming, and the "star people who don't tear their lips will die" are going to come out as demons again.
On October 14, 2021, the Lilac Life Research Institute released a popularity list of 6 of the 67 lip balm products collected by 5392 users, of which Yiquan ranked first, followed by Manshoton Mint Lip Balm, DHC Lip Balm, Vaseline Lip Balm, Blistex Baileishi Small Blue Jar, and Shiseido MOILIP Repair Lip Balm. But are these popular and easy-to-use lip balms really safe?

In December 2020, Consumer Reports sent 14 different brands of lip balm to a third-party authority, including Manschleton Peppermint Lip Balm, Vaseline Classic Repair moisturizing lipstick, Coyan's Lip Balm, LUCAS Luca's Papaya Balm, DHC Butterfly Olive Lip Balm, Elizabeth Arden Classic Lip Balm, Equint Moisturizing Lipstick, Nivea Lip Balm Natural, Otili Grape Seed Nourishing Lipstick, Corune In-Moisture Lip Balm, Carmex Xiaomi Trillium Repair Lipstick (tube), Blistex Blue Lip Repair Lip Balm (International Edition) 12 more popular lip balms in the domestic market, as well as Carmex moisturizing moisturizing lipstick (US version), Blistex Small Blue Jar Lip Balm (US version) two kinds of Haitao edition lip balm.
Safety assessment: Testing of MOAH/MOSH mineral oil, lead, nickel, phenol and other safety items.
1, Vaseline, Carmex Xiaomi, Mansoleiten, Keyan's, LUCAS Luca's, Blistex Blue Lip, Yiquan and other 7 models detected a certain amount of saturated hydrocarbon mineral oil MOSH.
Based on the product with the highest MOSH content detected this time (1.7mg/kg = 0.00017%), the amount of MOSH that may be ingested in 1 year using this product is 0.00003536g, which is very small, and it is far below the recommended limit of the European Cosmetics Association and consumer organizations, so the safety risk is small. Based on the test results, it can be seen that most of the regular lip balms in China have a slight content of mineral oil, and normal use will not bring safety hazards.
2. 14 lip balms detected lead and nickel, two kinds of heavy metals, of which all samples did not detect lead, while only one DHC Butterfly Olive Lip Balm was detected with a trace amount of nickel with a content of 0.1mg/kg.
Nickel can cause contact dermatitis, although there is currently no evidence that oral intake of nickel is carcinogenic. But nickel compounds are included in a list of carcinogens. Nickel is a prohibited component of cosmetics, but China's "Cosmetic Safety Technical Specifications" (2015 edition) does not currently stipulate a limited amount of impurity nickel. The relevant German cosmetics regulations require that the nickel content must not exceed 10 mg/kg.
3. 2 domestic imported versions of lip balm of Carmex and Blistex, and 2 types of lip balm of Haitao version were detected to be banned from Cosmetics in China.
The domestic import version of the product ingredient label and import filing information shows that the phenol-free Carmex Xiaomi Repair Lipstick (tube) and Blistex Blue Lip Can Repair Lip Balm (International Edition) detected phenol, and the detection amount is not low, respectively, 3969μg/g, 564μg/g, which does not meet the requirements of China's cosmetics, so it is rated as a substandard product by this journal.
Phenol (PHENOL) is mainly used as a preservative in cosmetics and skin care products. Phenol is toxic, the biggest impact is on women's fertility, may lead to infertility or difficulty in childbearing, at the same time, can damage the liver and kidney organs. Phenol is a banned ingredient in the EU Cosmetics Regulations and a banned ingredient in China's Cosmetic Safety Technical Specifications (2015 Edition). Phenol is not banned in the United States, but its use is restricted. For safety reasons when using lip balm products that may be swallowed, it is recommended that you use as little or no use of the 4 lip balm detected above with phenol.
Efficacy assessment results:
1, Elizabeth Arden, Nivea moisturizing degree is good, yiquan to remove dead skin effect is outstanding
2, the effect of peeling is better, and Otilly and Carmex have almost no effect
3, Koyan's greasy paste mouth, Elizabeth Arden, Nivea moisturizing is good
Based on the test results, Consumer Report recommends Elizabeth Arden, Nivea and Kerun, with higher scores, and does not recommend the use of Carmex Little Honey And Blistex Lips containing the banned substance phenol.
Tips for using lip balm:
1. Lipstick should be dedicated to avoid cross-infection.
2. It is best to wipe the lips on your mouth clean before eating, and avoid excessive intake of lip balm.
3. Dry lips can not rely solely on lip balm, if the lips are particularly dry and easy to crack, you should find the cause from the inside of the body. There are several reasons for this: dry weather that causes the body to lose too much water; vitamin B2 deficiency; indigestion; chronic cheilitis or allergic cheilitis. Therefore, it is best to ask a doctor to help diagnose it in time.
4. Keep your lips healthy, in addition to applying lip balm, it is more important to replenish more water, maintain adequate and high-quality sleep, and help the lip skin to maintain healthy and moisturized from the inside out.
