Carrying out artificial breeding and stocking of fish can effectively increase aquatic biological resources, restore the ecological environment of water areas, and maintain biodiversity, which is an important measure to maintain the water ecology and water environment of Hunan. This year, Hunan Province will focus on dongting Lake, the "four waters" and its tributaries, the waters of the Pearl River Hunan, large reservoirs of more than 50 square kilometers, and the waters of the aquatic germplasm resources protection area, and uniformly organize the proliferation and stocking of aquatic organisms, and plan to release more than 626 million fish species and parents (grains) throughout the year, mainly releasing economic species such as "four big fish", silver fish eggs, and rare species such as giant salamander, cochineal carp, and dorsal tumor clams.

Hunan Province has organized and carried out province-wide artificial breeding and stocking activities for more than 20 consecutive years, and has achieved obvious results. Data from the Hunan Institute of Fishery Sciences shows that in the Dongting Lake basin, from 2008 to 2019, the proportion of four major fish in the catch rebounded from 2.4% to 18%.
