During the Han Dynasty, the area around present-day Xiaochang County in Xiaogan City belonged to Jiangxia County, Jingzhou. During the Northern Zhou Dynasty, Nanchang County belonged to Anlu County. After the Sui Emperor Yang Jian established the Sui Dynasty, Xiaochang County was subordinate to the Governor of Anzhou. In the first year of Daye (605), Xiaochang County was subordinated to Anlu County. After the establishment of the Tang Dynasty, Xiaochang County belonged to the Governor of Anzhou. In the third year of Yuan He (808), Xiaochang County was merged into Yunmeng County. Finally, during the Northern Song Dynasty, the area around present-day Xiaochang County belonged to Xiaogan County, Lude'an Province, Jinghu Lake. After the establishment of the Yuan Dynasty, Xiaogan County belonged to Huguanghang Province. After Zhu Yuanzhang established the Ming Dynasty, the area belonged to Hu Guangcheng's declared envoy Si De'an Province. During the Kangxi Dynasty of the Qing Dynasty, the provinces of Guangxing were Hunan Province and Hubei Province, and the area around present-day Xiaochang County belonged to Xiaogan County, De'an Province, Hubei Province. In April 1993, Xiaogan District was abolished and a prefecture-level Xiaogan City was established, with Xiaonan District in the south and Xiaochang County in the north.
