The Ningxia Military Region of the Chinese People's Liberation Army was established in October 1949 by the 65th Army of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, and the commander of the Ningxia Military Region at that time was Comrade Wang Daobang, the political commissar of the 65th Army of the People's Liberation Army.

In January 1951, the 65th Army was relieved of the Ningxia Military Region.

In August 1954, in accordance with the Decision of the State Council on the Transfer of Ningxia Administrative Regions to Gansu Province, the Ningxia Military Region was abolished, and the original military affairs were concurrently held by the Gansu Military Region; in May 1955, the Gansu Military Region was abolished, and the military affairs were concurrently handled by the organs of the Lanzhou Military Region.

In May 1958, the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region was established, and the new Ningxia Military Region was established on the basis of the Organs of the Yinchuan Military Sub-district.
