It is said that scavenger fish were originally introduced from Latin America as ornamental fish, but due to the adaptability of scavengers, they have now flooded in some areas, destroying levees and causing considerable damage to fishermen. According to the previous response to invasive animal species, the usual measures taken are to eat as much as they can, such as crayfish, bullfrogs and other exotic species have become a delicacy on the table. However, no one dares to eat scavenger fish, why is this?
Let's explore it together.

Scavenger fish, as the name suggests, has a strong ability to clean, but its ability to clean is not because it has its own purification system, but because it is particularly edible. Its mouth is like a suction cup, and it can eat seaweed and moss. But don't assume that it's suitable for fish tanks, thinking that it will help clean up moss and algae from fish tanks. The scavenger fish eats everything and does eat the moss in the tank, but it will not let go of the eggs and fry in the tank, and sometimes other ornamental fish in the tank will become the food in their stomachs when they are sick.
Scavenger fish eat a lot of food, and when they are still fry, they also eat fish dung, which is called "garbage fish". Due to the long-term eating of silt, moss and algae, the meat quality and taste of scavenger fish are not good, and the body smell is heavy. It is said that several Sichuan chefs tried to cook scavengers into food, but they used heavy oil and spicy, but they still could not hide the scavenger's fishy smell.
Therefore, the scavenger fish's lack of pickiness, taste and incorrigible fishiness have become the main reasons why it has not been able to be made into a delicacy.
Secondly, the scavenger fish introduced to China are small, with less meat and more bone, which is not in line with the needs of the catering market and consumers. In China's seafood market, although there are also fish with more thorns or less meat, these fish will be delicious and moderately priced, and there will always be a place in the market. While scavengers have less meat and more bones and don't make it delicious, it is obviously not wise to choose it as a delicacy.
So, how do scavenger fish flood our country?
When scavenger fish is introduced, it is introduced into China as an ornamental fish and is properly released out of respect for life. But after the release, the number of scavenger fish soared.
This is because, first of all, the scavenger fish is extremely adaptable and easy to feed, so once its living conditions are met, the survival rate of this fish is very high. Scavenger fish have certain requirements for water quality, because they originally lived in the tropics, so they must survive in weak acid water, the temperature should not be too low, the south has become their main habitat, China's Pearl River can be seen everywhere. Although it is picky about water quality, as long as the environment is suitable, it can survive by relying on the habits of life that everything can eat and the tenacious vitality. As a result, scavenger fish will proliferate in some parts of China.
Secondly, scavenger fish have almost no natural enemies in China, such as sub-pufferfish and American crocodiles, so the probability of being eaten by natural enemies is close to zero, and the number will naturally increase. One of the important reasons why nature can maintain ecological balance is that various organisms can balance each other, and each organism has the constraints of natural enemies, so it can maintain a certain number, and there will be no excessive number of species. There are certain differences in the climate and environment of different places, so the organisms in different places are not the same, and scavengers, as an alien species, have almost no natural enemies in China. Without the checks and balances of other species, the number will naturally explode.
When a species of creature surges, it is easy to flood, which will eventually cause some problems. If the number of scavenger fish surges, the following problems will occur:
The first problem is that as the scavenger fish grows, its food intake will also increase, which makes fry and eggs in the same sea have an existential crisis. According to statistics, adult scavenger fish can eat about 3,000-5,000 fish eggs in a day. This speed makes it almost impossible for different species of fish in the same sea to be born of new life, and may eventually make other species of fish in this area disappear.
The second problem is that the breeding method of scavenger fish is usually to burrow and spawn, but due to the increasing number, the number of caves will naturally increase in order to reproduce. When the scavenger fish spawn, the nest can reach a maximum depth of nearly 1 meter, which has a huge impact on the river embankment and is likely to cause the river embankment to collapse.
Invasive species are dangerous to the entire ecosystem of the region. The absence of organisms that can restrain invasive species can seriously damage the local biodiversity and ecological balance. This is almost a devastating blow to nature. Hopefully, in the future, effective solutions can be found.
