Shanghai, 1 Nov (Xinhua) -- The 4th World Top Scientists Forum opened on 1 November in the Lingang New Area of the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone, and for a period of three days, more than 130 winners of the world's top scientific awards, including 68 Nobel laureates, will attend.
Focusing on the annual theme of "Open Science: Building an Open Innovation Ecology", the forum set up nearly 100 conferences and activities in 14 sections, involving chemistry, physics, life sciences, mathematics and other basic disciplines.
At the opening ceremony, Michael Levitt, vice president of the World Association of Top Scientists and winner of the 2013 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, on behalf of the World's Top Scientists Association, released the "Open Science: Building an Open Innovation Ecology" initiative to the world, advocating open science and encouraging actions that support open science.
The organizers of the forum announced the creation of the World's Top Scientists Association Award, the first two individual awards of the Mathematics and Intelligent Science Award and the Medical and Life Science Award, which are selected once a year, and the amount of each individual award is 10 million yuan. The award will officially launch the selection and awarding in 2022.
The World Top Scientists Association Award is initiated by the World Top Scientists Association, hosted by the Shanghai World Top Scientists Development Foundation, and exclusively donated by Sequoia China. The awards are international scientific awards established in China, organized by social forces, and selected and awarded to scientists around the world, to recognize scientists who have made outstanding contributions in their fields on a global scale.
Roger Korenberg, president of the World Association of Top Scientists and winner of the 2006 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, said that the World's Top Scientists Association Award focuses on supporting original basic research and encouraging scientific and technological personnel to better devote themselves to and serve the common well-being of all mankind. "Through unremitting efforts, we are confident that this science award, which was created in China, will become the world's top science award with significant international influence."
The 4th World Top Scientists Forum is co-sponsored by the World Association of Top Scientists and the China Association for Science and Technology, and co-guided by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
