Bai Gen'an, who has been dealing with goldfish for more than 30 years, loved fish from a young age, and later opened a fish factory to raise goldfish, and he experienced and witnessed the rise and fall of local goldfish in Xi'an. He said that a species of goldfish from emergence to stereotyping, is inseparable from the local water and soil, and like people, "one side of the water and soil breeds the other side of the fish." Although there are not many varieties of native goldfish in Xi'an, only the five varieties of wang zi tiger head, small tail rat head leather ball pearl, waist blister, abacus, and broad bean eye, but all of them are loud in the country. If these fish are to be kept outside of Xi'an, they will look different.
Each of the five species of goldfish has its own characteristics
Goldfish all over the world originated in China, as early as the Song Dynasty has been domesticated, after a long period of breeding, the variety is constantly optimized, there are currently more than 125 species, and now the goldfish in all countries in the world are directly or indirectly introduced by China.
Xi'an five kinds of native goldfish, the most domineering is the king character tiger head, mainly red and white or red, the head is high, square, the head of the meat has an orange petal texture, the top of the head has a "king" character line, everywhere up the ridge, the pile of meat has been grown backwards to the waist, the body is thick, flat waist, no bow back, much larger than the popular Lan Shou on the market now, the maximum can grow to 1 pound, which is also an important place that distinguishes it from other places where tiger heads are produced. Lanshou from Japan and Thailand is bred from the hybridization of Chinese tiger heads with other fish species.

The most abundant is the small tail rat head leather ball pearl, usually blue or red and white flower body color, the body is like a leather ball round pier, the tail is as small as the scorpion tail, the head is very small, and retracts, the scales are like pearls, swimming up gracefully.
The most peculiar appearance is the waist blisters, generally black, red, flower tri-color, a pair of large blisters grow from the eyes, all the way back, because the shape of the blisters is very similar to the pig's loin and named, the largest blisters are larger than duck eggs, because the two large blisters are filled with body fluids, so this fish can only stay at the bottom of the water, but its growth rate is the fastest.
Abacus and fava bean eyes belong to the dragon eye class, mostly black and flower colors, slender and long, phoenix tail, can grow to nearly 30 cm long. The only thing that is different is the eye, and the pair of large eyes of the abacus are like two abacuses, round, thin, and flat. A pair of broad bean eyes, live and peel off are two large broad beans.

The high elimination rate leads to the disappearance of modern goldfish species, most of which are short and thick, suitable for breeding and ornamentation in small environments such as aquariums. Traditional old species of goldfish, the overall image is biased towards the slender body shape, huge body, suitable for fish pond or scenic pond feeding and ornamentation, not suitable for living in a small space aquarium. This is one reason for the disappearance of traditional native fish species, but it is not the main reason.
Bai Gen'an said that the main reason is that the elimination rate is too high and the feeding cost is large. For example, the most common orchid on the market, the finished fish production rate is 50%, while the native fish species are less than 10%, most of them have body or color deformities, mutilations, a breeding season, can stay only a few, gradually no one to raise.
Most of the goldfish products below are now hard to find. The anchovy crane is red, light and ethereal, and gently swims in the pool, reflecting the "elegant elegance", like a girl. Goose head red, oval top tumor, highlighting the classical charm, elegant and luxurious, reflecting the "quaint" charm, just like the ancient noblewomen as gorgeous and noble. The lion's head, a square and large head tumor, shows the lion king's majesty in the water, and the instrument is majestic and unyielding. The traditional red-crowned tiger, the head shape of the cone, the plump and tight sarcoma, resembling the charm of the tiger's head, shows the wind of the king in the water, the tiger is proud of the world, the wind is majestic, and it reflects the domineering spirit of the "Tiger King". There are also anchovy dragon's eye, a pompom, a lion's head ball, a tiger's head ball, a blue dan phoenix, a white flower pearl, a vermilion ball violet robe, a blue tiger head, a magpie flower lion's head, a cinnabar blister...
40 years of obsession with goldfish
After inquiring from many sources, I met Jiao Ruihong, a famous "old player" in Xi'an. In order to raise goldfish, the elderly specially chose a floor with a terrace. On the terrace are three large tile jars, which are said to have survived from the Qing Dynasty and are paired with fish. Jiao Lao pointed to one of the large fish and said, "Look, here's a pair of abacuses with blue background flowers and two pairs of black broad bean eyes." The palm-sized goldfish has a pair of big eyes that really resemble broad beans and abacus beads, and a long phoenix tail that swims like a ribbon. Jiao Ruihong began to raise goldfish as a teenager, and now for more than forty years, he especially likes these two species. Looking down from above, it's like looking at a moving painting, relaxing. In order to breed goldfish, he also built a fish pond, and now he lives in a building, and there is no yard, and the fish are getting less and less, and now there are only these pairs left. Ten years ago, there were still people in Xi'an who kept these native goldfish, but now they can't be found anymore. Now they are all inbreeding, so there are many juvenile fish hatched every year, but most of them are defective products, which cannot achieve the purpose of ornamentation.
Speaking of this, Jiao Lao is helpless, on the one hand, he hopes to keep the native fish species in Xi'an, on the other hand, he hopes to find players who may still raise these two kinds of fish, communicate with each other, and let more people see the unique goldfish varieties in Xi'an.
Goldfish have a wide variety in China and have become a culture. The existing goldfish species, except for a few foreign goldfish species, are mostly cultivated and improved from traditional old goldfish species. Traditional old breeds of goldfish (including court goldfish) are slowly fading out of the historical stage. Nowadays, some goldfish lovers believe that modern goldfish do not have the "charm" or "spirit" of traditional goldfish, and slowly return to the protection and breeding of traditional old varieties of goldfish. For example, the head shape of the traditional tiger head emphasizes the square shape, the head tumor is tight, while the modern tiger head (also called the lion's head) head tumor is fluffy, the apical tumor is round, this kind of tiger head is somewhat unworthy of the name, has lost the mighty power of the tiger. There is also the traditional king word tiger head, the head type parietal tumor is towering rectangular, the parotid tumor is not as developed as the parietal tumor, which is not so narrow and long compared with the Nichishou (Japanese lanshou), but it is fuller and towering than the Nichishou head tumor, and the "king" character formed by the accumulation of the top sarcoma is unique and cannot be compared with other goldfish species.
At present, the best preserved traditional old breeds, such as Wuhan cat lion, Chongqing tiger head and other breeds, have always maintained the characteristics of the original breed, thanks to a group of enthusiasts who love them.
