On October 22, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Wang Wenbin presided over a regular press conference. A reporter asked a question, on the 21st, China and the Pacific island countries held a foreign ministers' meeting and issued a joint statement, calling on relevant countries to prudently handle the issue of nuclear-contaminated water discharge to the sea and fully consult with stakeholders and relevant international agencies. Could the Spokesperson provide a briefing?

Wang Wenbin said: Just now I introduced the situation of the foreign ministers' meeting held between China and the Pacific island countries, and I would like to add to you that at this meeting, China and the Pacific island countries also exchanged views and expressed concerns on the disposal of nuclear-contaminated water in Fukushima, Japan. The issuance of the joint statement of the Foreign Ministers' Meeting fully demonstrates that the issue of the disposal of nuclear-contaminated water in Fukushima is not a private matter of the Japanese family, but a major international issue related to the public health of the Pacific Rim countries and the global marine ecological environment.

Wang Wenbin said that the joint statement also sent a clear signal to the Japanese side that important stakeholders such as China and Pacific island countries are highly concerned about Japan's plan to discharge Fukushima nuclear contaminated water into the ocean. It is hoped that the Japanese side will earnestly listen to the voices of its neighbors and the international community, prudently handle the issue of nuclear contaminated water in Fukushima in an open, transparent and responsible manner, and refrain from initiating the discharge of nuclear contaminated water to the sea until it has fully consulted and reached an agreement with stakeholders and relevant international institutions.
