On the 30th, the Yangtze River Delta Regional School of Mathematics Deans Forum and the Inauguration Ceremony of the School of Mathematics of East China University of Science and Technology were held in East China University of Science and Technology.
Mathematics is an indispensable and important support for aerospace, national defense and security, biomedicine, information technology, energy and chemical engineering, artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing and other fields.
"The establishment of the School of Mathematics is not only an important measure for the school to focus on improving the development of the connotation of basic disciplines, but also a strategic choice for building a first-class socialist university." Xuan Fuzhen pointed out that in the future, Huali will be committed to building a school of mathematics with engineering characteristics, taking applied mathematics and data science as the main development direction, further strengthening the cross-integration with the school's advantageous engineering majors, focusing on expanding the application of mathematics in information processing, industrial control, scientific computing, artificial intelligence and other fields, and striving to build mathematics into a leading basic discipline for the long-term development of the school, and further improving students' science literacy. Strive to cultivate innovative R&D engineers who meet the needs of future economic and social changes and industrial development, and play an important supporting and leading role in achieving disruptive technological breakthroughs.
Shu Jinlong, director of the Higher Education Department of the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, pointed out that building a scientific and technological power urgently requires new achievements in the basic disciplines of universities and research institutes, and hopes that the School of Mathematics will aim at the development goal and rely on the characteristics of Huali disciplines to build a differentiated development path.
The Department of Mathematics of East China University of Science and Technology was established in the 1970s, in 1977 the Department of Applied Mathematics began to recruit undergraduates, in 1983 the Department of Mathematics was established, in 2011 it obtained the right to award doctoral degrees in mathematics first-level disciplines, in 2019 it was approved to set up a postdoctoral research station in mathematics, and in 2020, the Mathematics and Applied Mathematics major was approved as a national first-class undergraduate professional construction point, and a complete training system of "Ben-Master-Doctor-Postdoc" has been formed. Students have won the grand prize and the first prize in the American College Mathematical Modeling Competition and the National College Mathematical Modeling Competition for many times. Over the years, under the leadership of Scholars of the older generation such as Yu Wenkun, Wang Zongyao, Xia Ningmao, etc., the discipline of mathematics has achieved gratifying results in the fields of optimization theory and method, applied functional analysis and operator algebra, stochastic analysis and financial mathematics, and the relevant achievements have won the second prize of Shanghai Natural Science and the first prize of Shanghai Teaching Achievement Award for many times.
In order to better play the leading role of mathematics, in July this year, East China University of Science and Technology issued a document to establish the School of Mathematics, with Professor Hou Yu as the first dean. The School of Mathematics consists of 2 departments (Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Department of Information and Computational Sciences), 2 research institutes (Institute of Applied Mathematics, Institute of Cognitive Neurodynamics), 2 research centers (Big Data Research Center, Intelligent Computing Center) and 1 Experimental Teaching Center (Mathematics Experimental Teaching Center), with 68 full-time teachers.
At the Subsequent Forum of Deans of Mathematics Colleges in the Yangtze River Delta Region, experts and scholars from Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Nanjing University, Hefei University of Technology, Zhejiang Normal University and other 18 universities in the Yangtze River Delta region conducted in-depth discussions on discipline development, talent training, and the construction of the teaching team, gathered consensus, gathered wisdom, continuously improved the training system for top-notch innovative talents in mutual learning, enhanced scientific and technological innovation capabilities in open cooperation, and jointly promoted the leapfrog development of mathematical disciplines.
