HOUSTON, May 20 (China News Service) -- The Climate Prediction Center of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration of the United States said on the 20th that the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season may be "active" than previous years, but it will not be as "busy" as 2020.
The weather agency predicts that the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season could see 13 to 20 named storms with sustained winds of 39 miles per hour or more, of which 6 to 10 could evolve into hurricanes with sustained winds of 74 miles per hour or more, including 3 to 5 strong hurricanes with sustained winds of 111 miles per hour or more.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said this year's Atlantic hurricane season is 60 percent more likely to be "active" than in previous years, and the agency said it would not be as busy this year as 2020 because of the end of the La Niña phenomenon.
Matthew Rosengrans, an expert at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate Prediction Center, said that the above-average water temperatures in the tropical Atlantic and Caribbean seas are expected this year, the weakening of tropical Atlantic trade winds and the strengthening of the West African monsoon, which may have an impact on Atlantic storm activity this season.
FMA Administrator Chriswell said this year's Atlantic hurricane season will begin on June 1, and it's time to be ready and more resilient.
The Atlantic hurricane season typically lasts from June 1 to November 30 each year. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, since 1990, an average of 14 named storms have occurred in an Atlantic hurricane season, seven of which have evolved into hurricanes, including 3 strong hurricanes.
According to the Associated Press, the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season was the most active season on record, with 30 named storms, 14 of which evolved into hurricanes, including seven strong hurricanes. The sheer number of storms in 2020 led meteorologists to have to use Greek alphabet naming after exhausting all 21 available names on the storm list.
