Chen Shizeng (1876-1923), known as Heng Ke, Zi Shi Zeng, Huai Tang. Jiangxi Xiushui people. His grandfather was the Governor of Hunan, his father was the famous poet Chen Sanyuan in the late Qing Dynasty, and his younger brother Chen Yinke was a great talent in modern academia. Due to family reasons, he has a deep traditional cultural cultivation since he was a child.
By the time he was 10 years old, he was able to write big characters and write poems. In terms of art, he is good at characters, landscapes, flowers and birds, and is proficient in all subjects. His flower and bird paintings began with Wu Changshuo, and then traced back to the Bada Shanren in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, Xu Wei in the late Ming Dynasty, and also extensively studied the Eight Monsters of Yangzhou and the School of Maritime Painting.
At the beginning of the twentieth century, many scholars felt the decline and drawbacks of Chinese painting, and they were eager to learn Western painting to open up a new way of Chinese painting, but Chen Shi was not moved, he insisted that art should be corresponding to it through spirit, and must try to get close to the taste of literati painting and learn the characteristics of literati painting. He righteously inherits the spirit of traditional Chinese art, and this idea also permeates his flower and bird paintings.
However, on the basis of inheriting the ming and qing traditional freehand flower and bird paintings, his flower and bird paintings have also innovated their own "dry" ink painting methods. He uses a dry pen to combine color, in the contrast between scorched ink and color, it appears particularly fresh, although there is a dry pen, but it also appears moist, which also forms Chen Shizeng's own style.
It's just a pity that Master Chen passed away a little early, and his artistic talent has not been fully displayed. Liang Qichao said: "Master Chen was once in the modern art world and can be called the first person. Regardless of the landscape and flowers, you can write his character.
