Washington, 12 May (Xinhua) -- On 12 May, Republicans in the US House of Representatives removed Liz Cheney, the third-largest Republican in the House of Representatives, from his post as chairman of the House Republican Meeting on the grounds of undermining intra-party unity. Cheney has repeatedly publicly attacked former US President Trump's remarks about massive fraud in the 2020 presidential election.

House Republicans held a closed-door meeting on the same day and removed Cheney as chairman of the House Republican Convention by word of mouth. Although Cheney was removed from her leadership position, she is still a Republican federal representative who can still seek re-election in the 2022 US midterm elections.

According to US media reports, Cheney still insisted on his position before the oral vote, saying that Republicans could not let Trump "drag us back" and could not "collude with Trump to undermine our democratic system". Cheney told reporters after the vote that Republicans cannot support the U.S. Constitution while believing Trump's "big lies" about the 2020 presidential election, and she will "do everything possible" to ensure that Trump cannot re-enter the White House.

Trump issued a statement after Cheney was ousted, saying that Cheney provided a basis for many policies of the Democratic Party, endangered Republican interests and "did nothing good" for the United States.

Shortly after Cheney was ousted, Rep. Alice Stephanick, Republican of New York, sent a letter to House Republicans proposing to take over as president of the House Republican Conference.

Cheney, 54, is the daughter of former U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney. In the House of Representatives' impeachment of Trump on the grounds of "sedition" in January, Cheney was one of 10 Republicans who voted in favor of impeachment.
