In April 2009, at the age of 16 and 341, Thibaut Courtois made his debut in the League One. Due to the departure of two goals in the winter break, Courtois moved into Genk's first team. While playing for Genk, Courtois helped the team win the 2010-2011 Bundesliga title, the second time in nine years that FC Thibaut was crowned, and Courtois became the team's main player for the first time in this season. In July 2011, Courtois moved from Genk to Chelsea Football Club and signed a five-year contract with Chelsea. After joining Chelsea, Courtois was loaned to Atletico Madrid. In the Europa League match between Atletico Madrid and Setúbal, Courtois replaced Sergio Arsenal as the starting goalkeeper for the team, which was also Courtois's first appearance for Atletico Madrid. On 9 May 2012, Courtois conceded a goal in the UEFA Europa League final against Athletic Bilbao, helping the team beat their opponents 3–0 to win the first European Championship of their careers. In August 2012, in the UEFA Super Cup final against Chelsea, Courtois once again helped the team win the title 4-1 against his opponents and win the first European Super Cup of his career.
