Shifang police cracked the first "sniffing" crime case in Sichuan, involving nearly 600,000 yuan

Recently, the Shifang Municipal Public Security Bureau has received 4 reports from the public that the mobile phone number of its registered insurance company APP received some text messages containing digital verification codes for no reason in the early morning, and the next day found that the money in the bank card bound to the Bao"APP was transferred to Alipay, JD.com, Tenpay and other third-party payments, and all of them were consumed or transferred away, and one of the victims, Qiao Mou, was transferred away for more than 65,000 yuan at a time.

In response to this new type of case, the Shifang Municipal Public Security Bureau quickly dispatched elite police forces to form a special case team, collated and analyzed the 4 reports, and looked for clues to solve the case in an all-round way. Through combing, it was found that since February this year, more than 50 similar cases have occurred in Shifang City, involving an amount of nearly 600,000 yuan.

Further investigation by the police found that more than 50 cases were committed by using "mobile phone SMS sniffing technology". On November 7, after preliminary investigation, the Shifang police decided to close the net and arrested three criminal suspects. At present, the three suspects have been criminally detained by the Shifang police.

What is "sniffing"? According to He Yanzhe, a technical expert at the China Electronics Technology Standardization Institute, SMS sniffing technology is to obtain the user's SMS content by implanting a mobile phone Trojan horse or setting up a pseudo base station without affecting the user's normal reception of sms, including SMS verification codes from banks, third-party payment platforms and mobile operators.

In addition to stealing funds from users' financial accounts, SMS sniffing technology can also intercept the verification code sent by mobile operators to mobile phone users and use them to handle various value-added deduction services, thereby stealing mobile phone users' phone bills.
