United Nations, 28 Oct (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Security Council issued a media statement on 28 October urging the Sudanese military to immediately release the detained civilian officials and restore the transitional government led by civilian officials.

The statement said that the members of the Security Council expressed serious concerns about the Sudanese military's military takeover of Sudan on the 25th, the detention of the Transitional Government Prime Minister Hamduk and other leaders, the suspension of some transitional institutions, and the declaration of a state of emergency.

The members of the Council took note of the information that Hamduq had returned to his home and called on the Sudanese military to immediately release all detainees, called on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and avoid the use of violence and stressed the importance of full respect for human rights, called on the Sudanese military to restore a civilian-led transitional government in accordance with the constitutional document and other basic documents of the political transition, and called on all stakeholders to engage in unconditional dialogue to ensure the full implementation of the constitutional document and the Juba peace agreement.

The statement said that the members of the Council expressed solidarity with the Sudanese people and were willing to support efforts to achieve the democratic transition in the Sudan, believing that any attempt to undermine the democratic transition process would endanger the security, stability and development of the Sudan. The members of the Council reaffirmed their strong commitment to the sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and national unity of the Sudan and strongly supported the efforts of regional and subregional organizations.

Sudanese politics has recently faced serious divisions. Military leaders have called for a change of government, while some have accused the military of planning to seize power. On the 25th of this month, the Sudanese military declared a state of emergency, dissolved the sovereignty council and the transitional government, and relieved all governors. The Office of the Prime Minister of the Transitional Government of the Sudan issued a statement on the same day saying Hamduk had been "kidnapped" at his residence in Khartoum.
