The growth cycle of local coconuts in Hainan is long, generally reaching 7 to 8 years before they can flower and bear fruit. In order to facilitate farmers to plant and help farmers generate income, in the program, Teacher Zhang Jun introduced new varieties - "Wenya No. 2", "Wenye No. 3" and "Wenye No. 4", which have a short growth cycle, high yield and good taste, which will greatly improve the enthusiasm of farmers to plant.
In the process of growing coconuts, the most worrying thing for farmers is pests and diseases, among which pests such as coconut heart leaf beetles and red palm weevils are a huge threat to coconut growth. To this end, we invited Li Chaoxu, an associate researcher at the Coconut Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences, to explain the harm and control methods of coconut insect pests.
Coconut heart leaf beetle is a pest with the ability to fly, mainly harming the young heart leaves that have not been unfolded, causing the leaf tip to wither and droop, and the canopy to wither later, causing plant death. Teacher Li introduced that the most effective way to deal with coconut heart leaf beetles at present is to parasitize the larvae and pupae of coconut heart leaf beetles by parasitic wasps to achieve the purpose of killing coconut heart leaf nails. Subsequently, Teacher Li said that farmers only need to place a coconut research institute's self-made bee-releasing device per acre of land to effectively prevent coconut palms from harming coconut trees.

The red-brown weevil is a borer hazard that kills the tree by eating the young tissue of the heart. If you encounter a coconut tree damaged by a red-brown weevil, cut it down or burn it as soon as possible.
In addition, Teacher Li Chaoxu also introduced the prevention and control methods of trapping using pheromones of red-brown weevils. Placing the pheromone of the red-brown weevil into a trapper will volatilize the odor to attract the adult red-brown weevil and trap it. Traps are placed every 200 meters to achieve the effect of prevention.
Subsequently, we invited Niu Xiaoqing, an associate researcher at the Coconut Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences, to explain how to prevent and control the most harmful diarrhea blood disease in coconut trees. Laxative blood disease is caused by pathogenic bacteria infecting the tree through a wound on the tree, and once the humidity is high, it will cause the stem to rot and cause the tree to die.
If farmers find that coconut trees are infected with laxative blood disease, they should scrape off the infected epidermis, apply Bordeaux liquid or other agents, and strengthen field management to avoid the recurrence of wounds on the trunk and infection with pathogenic bacteria.
At the end of the program, we invited Shen Xiaojun, assistant researcher of the Coconut Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences, to introduce the development status of the coconut deep processing industry to us. The coconut industry, though traditional, can also be turned into a productive way to get rich. Coconut flesh is tender, coconut juice is refreshing, the trunk can be used as a beam, coconut shell can be carved, coconut root can be medicated, and regular consumption of coconut can promote the health of the human body, which can be described as "full of treasure".
Teacher Shen also said that the current coconut processing demand is 2 billion coconuts, but Hainan can only produce 200 million coconuts. Wow, it seems that they have found new business opportunities.
Shen Xiaojun pointed out that at present, there are more than 400 coconut processing enterprises in Hainan, nearly 2 million people are directly or indirectly engaged in the coconut industry, and the demand for processing coconut fruit is huge, hoping that more farmers can join the coconut planting and processing industry to achieve poverty alleviation and income increase as soon as possible.
