China's first creative writing award was launched in Shanghai, with a prize of 300,000 yuan per session

Since the introduction to China at the beginning of this century, the discipline of creative writing has developed vigorously, and according to incomplete statistics, more than 500 colleges and universities in China have set up creative writing majors. On September 3, the "He Jianming China Creative Writing Award" was announced at the Shanghai He Jianming Literature Research Institute, which is the first professional award in the field of creative writing in China, in addition to awarding writers and works, it also set up a theory award and a teaching contribution award.

Creative writing, also known as creative writing, in the 1920s and 1930s, the University of Iowa established a creative writing workshop, marking the establishment and promotion of creative writing as an emerging discipline in American universities. After a century of creative writing, covering more than 20 sub-disciplines, with a complete bachelor's, master's and doctoral training process of mature academic fields, it is known as "the world's unprecedented literary support system for contemporary writers".

In 2009, Fudan University pioneered the Master's Program (MFA) in Creative Writing with the aim of cultivating literary writers in Chinese mainland universities, which to a certain extent broke the pattern of postgraduate students majoring in literature in colleges and universities limited to academic research. Also established in 2009, the Center for Literature and Creative Writing of Shanghai University is one of the earliest creative writing majors in domestic universities, and was specially approved by the Ministry of Education as a master's and doctoral program in creative writing in 2014. The "He Jianming China Creative Writing Award" was donated by the writer He Jianming, and was organized by the China Creative Writing Center of Shanghai University, the World Chinese Creative Writing Association, and the Shanghai He Jianming Literature Research Institute as the organizers, which jointly formed the organizing committee and the jury, aiming to stimulate the creation of outstanding creative writing works, reward more authors, educators and organizations to pay attention to and participate in the construction and development of creative writing.

What exactly is creative writing? As one of the leaders of the domestic creative writing discipline, Professor Ge Hongbing of Shanghai University believes that the traditional writing mainly cultivates Kumon writing talents, and since entering the creative society, the proportion of cultural and creative industries in the social economy has continued to increase, and the creative writing profession has come into being. Compared with the individual creation of "going it alone", creative writing is often carried out in the form of workshops and other forms in the early stage, and more attention is paid to industrial transformation in the later stage. "Cultivating academic backbones, presenting the achievements of emerging creators, reflecting the intersectionality and exploratory nature of style, and serving the cultural and creative industries are the directions that the creative writing discipline is constantly striving for."

In He Jianming's view, creative writing should "break through the boundaries of ideas and technology", cross-border, innovative, cross-genre, and add the standard of creativity in addition to the traditional literary aesthetic. He observed that in addition to the major universities that have opened creative writing majors and established creative writing centers, many traditional literary scholars have also begun to consciously or unconsciously devote themselves to the practical trend of "creative writing".

"In Shanghai, the highland of China's creative writing discipline, the establishment of the first creative writing award in China is a matter of course. It is hoped that more writers, especially college students and young people in society, will join the ranks of creative writing, let young writers understand traditional creative methods, let traditional writers understand emerging and fashionable writing forms, and combine the two aspects to make Chinese literature present a more wonderful appearance. He Jianming said.
