More than 80 years ago, in the face of the situation of internal and external troubles and the poor and weak country, Zhang Boling, president of Nankai University, put forward the "three patriotic questions" at the opening ceremony of Nankai University in September 1935, igniting the patriotic fighting spirit of teachers and students. In the stormy old China, Nankai planted a new hope for self-improvement and survival.
In the Battle of Jiawu, the Qing court was defeated, and the Western powers set off a frenzy to divide China, and the British took advantage of this to rent Weihaiwei. At that time, Zhang Boling, who was serving in the Beiyang Marine Division, saw the Japanese sun flag lowered in Weihai and the Yellow Dragon Flag of the Qing Dynasty raised, and only one day later, the British rice flag was changed. Witnessing the "three easy national flags", Zhang Boling was deeply stimulated, and with the dream of "correcting the shortcomings of the times and cultivating talents to save the country", he co-founded Nankai with the patriotic educator Yan Xiu.
In September 1919, Nankai University was officially established. Regarding the positioning of Nankai University, the old president Zhang Boling once set the purpose: "The aspirations we have set for the new Nankai university are nothing more than 'knowing China' and 'serving China'. ”
At the opening ceremony of the 18th North China Games in 1934, hundreds of Nankai students used small purple and white flags to form slogans such as "Don't Forget the National Shame" and "Recover the Lost Land", which made the Japanese officials at the scene angry. Afterwards, the Japanese side asked Nankai to strictly discipline the students, and Principal Zhang Boling said to the students, You hate! You hate it so much! Next time I'm going to be so annoying! To be more subtly annoying!
In July 1937, the campus of Nankai University was bombed and set on fire by the Japanese army in turn, and only one Siyuan Hall remained in the campus building, and the beautiful Nankai Garden was reduced to ruins. In the face of the barbaric acts of the Japanese army, Zhang Boling said that the enemy's bombing of Nankai this time will be destroyed by the material of Nankai, and the spirit of Nankai will be frustrated and more and more energetic. In the anti-Japanese artillery fire, teachers and students from Peking University, Tsinghua University, and Nankai University went to the national disaster together, moved to Kunming, and formed the Southwest United University, composing a glorious chapter in the history of China's higher education.
In the era of peace, Nankai has cast patriotic feelings with the history of the century-old school and shaped patriotic identity with classroom teaching, so far more than 200 graduate student volunteers have gone to the western region to support teaching; every year thousands of students go deep into the grassroots to preach new ideas in the new era, serve local development with professional knowledge, and write patriotic feelings on the land of the motherland.
