Wang Yuan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a researcher at the Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, died in Beijing on May 14, 2021 at the age of 91 due to ineffective medical treatment.
Wang Yuan, born on April 29, 1930 in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu Province, graduated from the Department of Mathematics of Zhejiang University in 1952, was recommended by Chen Jiangong and Su Buqing to work at the Institute of Mathematics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, followed Hua Luogeng to study number theory, and was the director of the Institute of Mathematics and the chairman of the Chinese Mathematical Society. In 1980, he was elected as a member (academician) of the Faculty of Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Wang Yuan has made outstanding contributions to analytic number theory, algebraic number theory, and the application of number theory methods. His work on the Goldbach conjecture is China's first major achievement in this field. Together with Hua Luogeng, he pioneered the research direction of high-dimensional numerical integration and created the "Hua-Wang method". He also made outstanding achievements in Theophon analysis of the field of algebraic numbers and the application of number theory methods in statistics.
As a student of Hua Luogeng, Wang Yuan once sighed: "There are no less than 100 students who have studied under Mr. Hua Luogeng, but there are only five or six people who have finally been recognized by the world mathematical community. A common feature of these people is that they all have an independent and innovative spirit. ”
