Every year, the National Film Protection Administration selects 25 domestic films and places them in the Library of Congress for protection as "national treasures" for posterity.
This week, the Library of Congress released a list of the 25 newest works to join the family this year. Among them, there are film history classics such as "The Shining" and "Butterfly Dream", as well as recent masterpieces such as "Jurassic Park" and Ang Lee's "Brokeback Mountain", and there is also the first film in the history of American film "Wolf Smoke" created by Indians.

The Shining
Brokeback Mountain
In terms of genre, these 25 works involve drama films, documentaries, silent films, animation films, etc., and the time span of the production era has reached 107 years, and the earliest one is "Sweet Honey - Black Kiss" in 1898, which is only 29 seconds long and has only recently been excavated in the USC Film Archive. The short film shows the affectionate kiss of a black man and woman, which belongs to the "gimmick" work of the film company in the early years to attract audiences, but with the black as the protagonist, the expression of warmth and romance is very rare in American films more than 100 years ago, so it is particularly valuable in history. The latest of the 25 films to be filmed was "Brokeback Mountain", which was released in 2005, which is also a film full of romantic feelings.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the National Film Preservation Agency, and Librarian of Congress, Carla Hayden, said, "For the past three decades, we have been appreciating, celebrating, and preserving these remarkable works, and these precious film treasures must be properly preserved because they record our history, culture, hopes, and dreams." ”
Since the list of protected films was first agreed upon in 1989, a total of 750 films have been included in their scope of protection as of this year. The length of the selected films is not limited, whether they have been released or not does not matter, the only requirement is that the film must be completed for more than ten years, which is of great significance and conservation value in culture, art, history and aesthetics.
According to the consistent requirements of the screening of protected films, the 25 films selected this year are also "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant", and the selection process is the same as in the past: the nomination list is first given by film experts and general audiences, and the list is summarized by the librarian of the Library of Congress, who leads the special team to finalize the 25 works.
