Myanmar is an ancient civilization with a long history, formerly known as Hongshawady. After the formation of a unified state in 1044, it experienced three feudal dynasties of Bagan, Dongwu and Gongbang. Between 1824 and 1885, the British launched three wars of aggression against Burma and occupied Burma, and in 1886 the British designated Burma as a province of British India. On 4 January 1948, Burma declared its independence from the British Commonwealth and established the Union of Burma. In January 1974, it was renamed the Socialist Republic of the Union of Myanmar. In July 1988, demonstrations broke out across Myanmar due to the deteriorating economic situation.
