Sue Turner

Sue Turner, a master's student at the University of Hull, was awarded the Queen's Birthday Honours in recognition of her service to social justice.

Sue Turner OBE, currently pursuing a master's degree in artificial intelligence and data science, has worked throughout her career to improve the lives and situations of some of the most vulnerable people living in society.

Growing up in a small town on the outskirts of Bolton plagued by unemployment, addiction and poverty, Sue was raised by her diligent nurse mother, who became the first member in her family to attend university while studying law at the University of Bristol.

Sue founded her own company, AI Governance Limited, and now she has been awarded the Queen's Birthday Honours List.

She said: "When I read the letter saying that I would be awarded an OBE, I was struck by the fact that someone noticed that I had been trying to help people get better opportunities in life. ”

"This award is really a 'thumbs up' to all the amazing people who have contributed their time and money in our area.

"I'm proud of so many great things in this country, but it's shameful that 20 per cent of people in the UK live in poverty and the gap is widening. We still have a lot to do. ”

Sue, a former director of communications at the Bristol Port Company, has recalibrated the company's social responsibility to focus on supporting the communities closest to the port.

She then served five years as CEO of the Quarte Community Foundation, during which time she shifted the organisation's focus to "serving disadvantaged communities in the West of England".

Sue also helped set up bristol's City Fund (a collaboration between the Quadripartite, Bristol City Council and bristol & Bath) as an innovative locally based endowment fund to address entrenched inequalities in the city.

Sue said: "When I was a kid, when I got up at 6 a.m., I would hear my mum sweeping the floor with a vacuum cleaner before going to work. ”。

"She would put food on the timer in the oven, so we had a hot meal when we got home from school."

"Mom gave me confidence and never told me what I couldn't do because of where I came from. Throughout my career, I've been trying to find ways to help the disadvantaged, and I'm a firm believer in helping more people have a fair chance to live a good life. ”

Sue also founded AI Governance Limited, a company that works with businesses and policymakers to ensure that the use of AI and data is ethical and actively benefits the most vulnerable in society.
