Why do mechanical seals for lean liquid circulation pumps leak so often?

The lean liquid circulation pump of a desulfurization device often has mechanical seal leakage, especially when the pump is started, the mechanical seal will fail more frequently. When the on-site dismantling inspection was found: the spring of the mechanical sealing moving ring was filled with sulfur particles and other solid impurities (as shown in Figure 1), the mechanical sealing surface was worn, and the balance pipe and flushing line were blocked. The main reasons for this are as follows:

Why do mechanical seals for lean liquid circulation pumps leak so often?

  1. The lean liquid contains large particles of sulfur, and the spring contacts the lean liquid. When the pump is stopped, the sulfur in the lean liquid settles in the spring, causing the spring to lose its elasticity; After the pump is started, the static ring wears, and the moving ring cannot compensate for the static ring wear due to the loss of elasticity of the spring, resulting in mechanical seal leakage.

  2. The salt content in the desulfurization agent of the desulfurization system gradually increases, and the temperature decreases after stopping the pump, and salt crystallization occurs. Due to the presence of abrasive particle media, the local biting and tearing generated on the surface of the sealing element accelerate the wear failure of the sealing surface.

  3. The balance pipe and flushing pipe of the pump are blocked, resulting in insufficient or no liquid between the sealing surfaces, which is also the cause of mechanical seal damage.

  4. The gap between the inner diameter of the sealing surface and the shaft (or bushing) is small, the solids in the pumping medium accumulate in the small gap, so that the auxiliary sealing ring cannot work properly, and a large number of accumulated impurities in the pump body change the distribution of the gap between the positions of the rotor, which may also lead to the deterioration of the working environment of the machine seal and eventually lead to the damage of the mechanical seal.
