The National Reserve of the Bolivian Plateau boasts more than a million acres of natural wonders, including large flocks of flamingos. In stark contrast to their delicate appearance, they adapt well to the harsh natural conditions of the remote areas of southwestern Bolivia. This aerial view shows a rare flock of James flamingos. They are staying in Lake Colorada, a shallow salt lake with extremely acidic waters that make it impossible for most creatures to survive. These flamingos waded here, feeding on carotene-rich red miniature algae, and their feathers turned pink.

In addition to flocks of flamingos, the nature reserve features active volcanoes, geysers, hot springs, and a silent desert that stretches all the way to the foothills of the snow-covered Andes.
